There will be a lot of uphill and back down again. The views are fantastic, so if you can make it, go. If you cant hike on such an incline, there are a few small parking lots you can drive most of the way up. There are a few trails that take you around the side, so make sure you follow the right path back down to leave. There are only 2 driving paths and an additional 1 or 2 foot paths to walk in and out. One of the foot paths puts you on a residential street – but theres no signage if you have never been that way and are looking for it.

We parked in the lot and it was about a 15-20 minute leisurely walk to the top. The views are fantastic! It's very windy at the top, but worth it for the 360 degree views of Auckland - the tower, the water, the houses, the boats, it's all there! Plus the middle of the hill is actually a huge crater so that was really cool too. A bit of information about the crater (and even maybe about some of the sights that you're seeing) would make it an exceptional spot.

Easy centrally located volcano cone with ample free parking. Short hike to the top with too viewing decks to see 360 view of the whole city. Would have liked more info on the geologic formations and significance of the cones but i was able to get that online.

Most of the mountains in auckland are not open to cars so have some walking shoes on and join the crowds heading up the windy road to the top of the mountain and sit and look at the awesome view. Walk around the top and see every view of Auckland possible. Look down into the volcanic crater and see who had created a message with the rocks in the grass. Walk amongst the cattle and sheep and take a short cut down one of he tracks back to the road.

Auckland was one of our port-of-calls on our 12-night NZ cruise. Being our first time in Auckland, we wanted to explore the city on our own instead of joining day tours to sites outside of the city centre. Mt.Eden is located approximately 4 km from the CBD. The hike up to the top is well paved but steep for those that have weak knees. There is a small store at the half way point where you can have refreshments and restroom break (portable potty). Once at the top, you have a very nice view of Auckland. There are few viewing points where you can see the skyline from different sides. You can catch bus #274 or #277 from CBD and then do the small hike to the top of Mt. Eden.
