Our regular dinner before a show at the Arts Centre, Cafe Vic has a limited but tasty menu, which appears to change fairly regularly. There is a reasonable wine list, and both a dessert menu and a reasonable selection of cakes on display. As there is an evening rush from about 6pm its wise to book unless you're willing to hope on your luck, or arrive at 5.30pm.

Went for dinner before a performance. I’m sure it was busy as there are few options in this area unless you want to go to Southbank. Small portions and limited menu. Wait staff are run off their feet so don’t expect personal service. Wasn’t even asked if we’d like after dinner coffees. Got the feeling that the sooner we left the better. Take the short walk and go to the Southbank area for many great choices for dinner.

Called the booking line and unable to speak to a person u have to leave a message that may or may not result in a booking, no call was returned. Went to cafe anyway and was told we could be seated in annexe area and were promptly seated,no mention of time for meal service, note there were many other patrons already seated. A extremely abrupt waitress eventually came and her first statement was your food isn’t ready. Which was odd because we hadn’t ordered yet. Then after 15mins we asked what time meals start and had to wait 45mins for kitchen to open. We left and went the The Barre.

We turned up with an hour to spare before our MTC show and the restaurant was packed full. Despite this the staff were very willing to accommodate us and quickly showed us to a couple of chairs. We expected slow service but surprisingly the waitress reappeared quickly with a drinks and food menu ready to take our order. Service was fast considering the number of patrons. We were really happy with the quality of the food and size of the portions. The place emptied quickly as people moved to their shows but we lingered over a second drink. With 2 wines each and good food the bill was around $120.

We arrived for afternoon tea after a matinee performance at the Arts Centre & was told we'd "have to be quick" by a surly young waitress, as they were preparing for dinner service at 5.30pm. If you don't want patrons prior to a dinner service, then shut the restaurant down at a reasonable time instead of informing paying guests they'll "have to be quick". Most people like to linger over their afternoon tea after a performance. There's not much else in the vicinity for afternoon tea, so unfortunately they've got a captive audience. The saving grace was the genuine apology we received from another young waitress about being rushed. Food & alcoholic drinks were expensive for what they were, coffee & tea were okay.
