“One of best parks of Melbourne”
Review of Fawkner Park

Fawkner Park
Ranked #104 of 473 things to do in Melbourne
Attraction details
Reviewed 12 August 2018 via mobile

One of best parks in and around Melbourne for sports and leasuire. Situated just over toorak road has facilities for all types of sports. Have a great oval for cricket or footy depending on the season.
Just the walk to work from South yarra to St Kilda road through this park is amazing. The night is filled with possums. Need to be careful while walking alone beyond midnight through here as the possums trend to come very near.

It is a very large park that borders Toorak Road and it is one of those places you drive past and never go in.It is well maintained and a great expanse of green and a real asset although not spectcular other than its open spaces and green trees and sporting facilities and grounds. It was created in 1862 , all 41 Hectares of it and named after one of the founders of Melbourne John Fawkner for whom we thank very much for a great find and a great job.

Named after Melbourne's co-founder, John Pascoe Fawkner, with 100 acres first reserved in 1862, Fawkner Park remains largely unchanged from its original design. The spacious park features two art-deco brick pavilions and several walking paths that meander through the sweeping fields. They are lined with leafy Moreton Bay figs, elms, poplars and oaks. The park has been popular for tennis since the 1880s and the tennis club has a quaint cafe.
Summer weekend cricket matches have a real ‘village green' atmosphere, with spectators making use of the free barbecues and clean picnic shelters.
There's plenty to occupy the children throughout Fawkner Park, with excellent playgrounds, ample shady trees and beautiful maintained gardens that surround clean picnic tables and barbecues.
Fawkner Park boasts sweeping and flat open spaces, lawns, avenues of huge trees, bicycle and foot paths, picnic and bench seats around the many playing fields.
The operation of drones is prohibited due to the nearby helicopter landing zone at the Alfred Hospital.

In the 1890s sections of the park were set aside for up to ten different sporting activities, ranging from golf to football, so people strolling in the park could enjoy all these activities in a localised area. Today the park is largely unchanged from the early design. The Park caters for a range of sporting activities which includes cricket, softball, Australian Rules football, soccer, tennis and rugby. Yoga, outdoor aerobics and Zumba have also become popular.
Fawkner Park remains a beautiful public 'green space' for all Melburnians and visitors to enjoy. Another iconic and enduring piece of the history that makes ‘marvellous Melbourne’ such a liveable world city.
Fawkner Park is bounded by Toorak Road, St Kilda Road and Commercial Road with the huge Alfred Hospital forming the southern boundary.

I walk through the Fawkner park everyday as it's a shortcut to my workplace in St. Kilda Rd. It's huge and very well maintained. A lot of people come to this park to walk their dogs, jog or just get some exercise.

Fawkner Park hides its charms a little further south of the Botanic Gardens, bounded by Toorak, St Kilda and Commercial Roads. Lovely to live next to, a surprise to stumble across and fun for everyone (and their dogs!)
