My family and I recently stayed over the Christmas/new year period. This is our second stay on Hamilton Island and we absolutely love the place. Now, on first impressions this is a lovely apartment. The interior is very comfortable and spacious. The large verandah offers magnificent sea views and it's not too far from the main town centre. In all, we had a lovely week and I would love to say that we would stay here again. However, what lets this apartment down is the lack of maintenance. When we arrived at the apartment, only two rings on the gas hob worked, the extractor hood lights didn't work, the light in the laundry room didn't work and within a day only half of the barbecue worked. I rang maintenance and within 10 minutes the electrician was over to fix the light in the laundry room. However, the following day all the lights tripped downstairs. Mel came over to check out the problem. After flicking on the downstairs lights a number of times and with them still tripping she realized that the electrician was needed again. However, the electrician didn't want to come out as it was getting late in the day. Mel said that if he didn't come out then this was a 'deal breaker', obviously this meant something to him so out he came. I would also like to mention that once nightfall came, it would have been very dangerous negotiating the stairs down to the ground floor bedrooms and of the two flash lights supplied with the property, one didn't have any batteries in it and the the other one was flat. The electrician managed to sort out the electricity for the week we were there but the overall problem would need sorting out once we vacated. The gas plumber came to sort out the barbecue and explained that because the barbecue was so old, he couldn't fix it there and then as it would require a part. What we had to do was to turn on the gas on one side and then let the gas vapour waft over to the other side to ignite. As one of the knobs was also not working and any information that was around the knobs was worn away, it was also difficult to determine whether the gas was on or off. A few other things that could do with improving is the cooker hood needed cleaning, he gas hob needed replacing, the sheets on a couple of the beds had holes in them. There was no vacuum cleaner, or brush or mop supplied. This isn't a cheap apartment to rent and sheets with holes in them is not acceptable. One member of our group works for a holiday management company and she says that they have a check list for each property to ensure that lights etc are working. It is such a shame that such a beautiful property is just being run into the ground. As I see it, holiday rentals are a two way process in that you hand over your money in good faith and the owners have a duty to make sure that the facilities are in good working order and of a standard expected for the price they are charging. Just one last note, Kim who picked us up from the airport and dropped us off was lovely and very efficient.
