The Madison Plaza staff made a very poor attempt of contacting us to arrange a requested after hour check in.
The reception desk is only manned from 9 am to 9 pm with a split shift break at lunch time. We flew in to Townsville at 10 pm and weren’t due to arrive at the Madison till after 10.30 pm
Instructions for an after hour checkin weren’t sent till 3 pm of the afternoon of travel, by which time we were on our flight and could not comply with instructions.
The staff also omitted to list us as a guest, pending arrival, so after hour security would not grant us entrance, despite the room being pre-paid. We had to find alternate accommodation at 11 pm.
No apology and no refund from the Madison Plaza staff.
We would never recommend this property, but we did find the Grand Mercure to be very helpful and kind to us when we arrived in the middle of the night

Room tip: Don’t bother booking any room

Many issues with this hotel. Check in was a disaster. Although check in was 2pm, they asked me to wait until 2.30pm when I arrived as they were short staffed.

Then receptionist told me she would check with housekeeping for an update. She went to the back room and did not actually contact anyone - I could see her the whole time as the curved mirror in the foyer reflects the back office completely ! So lying to me wasn’t a good start.

But she came back to the desk and said my room was ready. I went upstairs and it hadn’t been touched. Still had dirty sheets and dirty towels and cups in the room. Went back down to tell her. Had to wait another hour before I could get into my rooms. Ridiculous.

Small rooms, large dark furniture makes rooms feel smaller. Pool not avail to use (apparently due to covid), rooms not serviced (apparently due to covid).

See pics. Not well maintained. Remote Controls filthy with dust. Light in bathroom held on with sticky tape. Rusty bathroom fittings. Yuk.

Location is good, Woolworths downstairs and the mall right there too.

Due to Covid we were unable to attend our booking. The property did have a non cancellation policy for our dates but as we phoned over 24 hours before our arrival date and due to the pandemic being the reason we would not be able to attend we thought it only fair the property did not charge us. Not only did they charge us but the rate today is $91.00 and we were charged over $200. This is a disgrace in our present pandemic. The management should be totally ashamed to charge when they were given heaps of notice. Do not stay here.

Room tip: Stay away, disgraceful cancellation policy in a pandemic

The Madison Plaza Hotel is definitely in the category of cheap budget accommodation. We found only two positives during our stay, the good city location and the bed was comfortable.
The negatives, obvious poor management as the Hotel seems to be getting run into the ground. The tall male receptionist came across as rude and aloof, was very unhelpful. The pool is closed but that is not advertised on their website. The Hotel seems to be catering to a very young age group who seem to be using the Hotel rooms to hold parties. Our stay included a weekend and on Friday and Saturday nights parties were being held on our floor, going to the early hours.
As their is no one in attendance in Reception between 9pm and 9am nothing could be done about these parties and noise.
The Madison Hotel is gradually turning into upmarket backpackers accommodation rather than a Hotel.

Needs alot of work inside very run down in areas. On arrival we were notified that the pool was still closed because of COVID-19 which I feel should be on the website as that’s the reason we actually booked this hotel. We left something behind in our room which was very important to our son, 15 phone calls later and after 3 days the Manager refused to talk to us. No one could tell us what had happened to this item and we were told 3 different things by 3 different staff members. We then proceeded to have to do an 11hr round trip drive to actually get any results. Absolutely feel that the care factor was zero. Really disappointed by this level of no customer service.
