Stayed at the Seagull's Nest in Carters Rest for a night in March-2016. Being a photographer, I chose this place because of its location: close to Neist Point Lighthouse. Also has a beautiful view of the Loch Pooltiel on one side and the Small mountains on the other. Booking was done online without a hassle, and checking in was smooth. Carters Rest is a super cool place in an awesome landscape. Seagull's Nest is spacious, clean & self-catering apartment well maintained by friendly hosts. Had a nice cozy stay after a long drive from Inverness & a tiring walk in Neist Point lighthouse. The Living room with attached kitchen, the bedroom & bathroom are very spacious & clean. All necessary cooking, electrical, heating provisions are available. Booking early is highly essential.
Right from the contact at booking stage with Julie, there was real personal interest shown in making our trip successful. Our main reason for wanting to stay in Glendale was proximity to The Three Chimneys as well as to sample Carters Rest, which has excellent reviews on Trip Advisor. Julie booked a table for us at The Three Chimneys and Steve very helpfully booked a return taxi for us for our Three Chimneys experience (only about 3.5 miles from Carters Rest).
We stayed for 2 nights at Carters Rest - my wife & I in the Seagull's Nest self-catering apartment (although Julie was able to let us have breakfast each day at a very reasonable £12.50 each cost).
I review based on 3 main things - standard of accommodation; quality of food; and service; and also take what I am paying into account.
Quality of breakfast - this was excellent - everything cooked freshly to order and an interesting twist on porridge with small side bowls of pine nuts and forest fruits (nice touch!).
Service / hospitality - could not be faulted. When Julie heard we were going to cook steak in the apartment on our first night, she offered us use of her own griddle pan. Steve and Julie are two, lovely friendly people who clearly have a passion for what they are doing.
Standard of accommodation - this is generally high and it is good to have a Residents Lounge. However, in spite of the property being in a very scenic location, it seems to have been built with only the dining room enjoying the stunning view over the water. The Seagull's Nest was well equipped, although there were some niggles - a large sign on the kitchen door about a 2% surcharge if you pay by credit card (this should go into the terms & conditions at booking stage); the bedroom window is directly beside a path that the owners use, so needed to shut curtains to ensure privacy (vertical blinds may be good for this window); the bed was okay; some floor mats that get trapped in doors (inside front door and also outside hall cupboard door).
Overall, taking everything into account (including the price), I would rate this as a 4 star, even 4.5, just not quite 5 star for me.
We also enjoyed a lovely circular walk in Glendale and saw some outstanding scenery.
Stunning views. Beautiful sun lit hills with sheep and rabbits playing happily. Everything catered for. Clean and modern. Friendly owners who leave you to your own devices unlessyou need them. No fussing, which was great. Only down side was slight lack of privacy with people walking past our windows. Apart from that a very enjoyable stay.
