“Beautiful Views and a great sense of History”

Hackpen Hill white horse
Reviewed 13 March 2017

We just happened upon this Whitehorse after a visit to Broad Hinton. My daughter and I were on a visit from the U.S. and this was among other exciting happenstance finds along our journey of over 1,300 miles of road tripping around England. We were so excited to see this and stopped shortly before sunset so it was particularly magical. It was windy at the top of the hill but would be a perfect picnic site in the warmer months. Very enchanting indeed!

If you want spectacular views over the countryside take a walk or drive up Hackpen Hill. If you walk from The Barbury up a fairly muddy track you are soon rewarded with views over to Broad Hinton and on a good day you can see Silbury Hill near Avebury. The White horse is reached through a stile across the road from the parking spot which you use if you drive up Hackpen Hill. You certainly get the cobwebs blown away on a windy day.
The car park is on The Ridgeway and you can walk to Avebury one way or Barbury Castle the other way. An exhilarating walk.
Finish off with a pint at The Barbury (closed on Mondays).

A walk along the Ridgeway long distance path brought us views south all over Wiltshire. The day was clear and crisp. Others were out with dogs and children. Kite flying was in order and riding bikes and puddle jumping. All great activities on a holiday afternoon. Well worth the effort of getting out. Give it a go.

A well tended site and well maintained. Visible from the main road it's worth getting a little closer. Fairly impressive and of a good size - it's worth a day trip if also visiting Avebury

We were at the nearby Barbury Castle hill fort, so decided to take a detour and drive along part of the Ridgeway (yes it is allowed, please please take care of walkers and horses), to Hackpen Hill White Horse.
We hadn't told the kids what we were going to see, so it was really fun watching my son try and work out what it was he was standing on, with lots of weird and wonderfull guesses!
From the car park at the top of the hill on the Ridgeway, you can't see the horse - only a short walk away downhill, but the views to the north of Swindon are worth it alone. There was also a plane in the sky flying around to keep the kids entertained.
If you like to get away from it all, avoiding the crowds at the larger more well known touristy White Horses, then this is the one to see.
There is an information board, giving just enough history (well theories) on the white horses formation.
The setting is fantastic, with the prehistoric horse in its natural setting, as mother nature and the builders intended.
Therefore, no shops, no burger vans, no toilets etc etc - perfect environment.
The best view is from the Swindon side of the Swindon to Devises road, North side at the bottom of the Hackpen Hill.
Please take care if crossing the road from the car park to the path to the white horse, as drivers tend to drive past very fast, and the entry is blind - could really do with a 30 mph restriction or rumble strips on the road!
