Reviewed 14 December 2014

I stayed in this small hotel for two nights, from 11-13 December 2014. Paid 250,000 Rupiah per night. This hotel was recommended to us by our Acehnese driver.

Negative aspects (which could still be improved) of this hotel:

1. Smoke, smoke and horrible cigarette smell in the room

I stayed in the room right in front of the lobby, because the rest of the rooms were fully occupied at that time.

People smoke in the tiny hotel lobby, so its smoke and strong smell seeped into my room, (yuck!) and i got sick from it. On the first night, we slept early since we were very tired from travelling. At about 1 am, i was awoken by strong cigarette smell whcih i thought came from the ventilation duct and from outside the room.

I had asthmatic attack staight away; i had difficulty in breathing and my nose flooded with fluids and phlegm. I was also coughing continuously and could not sleep until morning. I did'nt bring my medicated inhalers and i thought i was going to die! Even as i write this review, i could still feel the horrible smoke presence! On the second night, the same thing happened.

Luckily we were outdoor at all day time. My asthmatic symptoms took quite sometime to dissappear that day. I had two horrible night stay here. Don't know how they are going to fix this situation, since smoking is very prevalent everywhere in Indonesia.

2. The shower head in the toilet could not be fixed to its holder. So you have to hold it with your hand while showering

3. The towels supplied in this hotel varies in quality, between very old and very thin to quite new but still very thin. The towel size was very small, could only go around very slim waisted ladies. Also the towels comes with chilldren motives like Doraemon! I can't imagine big size European men, who come to Sabang Island for scuba diving or snorkeling, using this kind of towel. Haha! So, don't say that i did'nt warn you. Better to bring your own towel.

4. The soap supplied by this hotel was very-very tiny and the moment you use it, it will break into two. Not much lather produced by this soap. So, if you still insist to stay in this hotel, bring your own sullply of toileteries.

5. The hotel price did not include breakfast.

6. I had about seven minutes electrical blackout episode while staying in this hotel. It happened in the early evening, while i was taking my bath. The hotel has power generating back up machine though, to overcome this kind of episod.

7. The room in which i stayed was without window. So we could not get fresh air from outside. When we open the room door, we get stale, strongly smelled of cigarette air from the lobby. And that was not healthy at all!

8. This room was also very noisy, with noise coming from traffic in front of the hotel. But we did'nt sleep well because of poor air ventilation, and not becausese of traffic noise.

Positive points about this hotel:

1. Its location is near stalls and restaurant, so finding food was very easy. Right in front of the hotel, across the road, there were two stalls selling breakfast items; delicious, cheap and a good of variety local cakes and rice. The coffee there is good. I like it! The kuih is sold at1000 Rupiah per piece, the coffee 4000 Rupiah per small glass and the rice cost 5000 Rupiah per pack.

2. There are also restaurants near the hotel selling nasi padang, mee Aceh and other kind of Aceh foods, within five minutes walking distance from Kartika Hotel.

3. Shopping for souveneer items and local fruits is also very near

4. Have strong wifi signal in the room, and its free of charge.

5. Easy to find transport to go to jetty terminal and to go around Sabang Island. Quite a number of cars loitering in front of the hotel, looking for passangers, especially in the morning.

6. The water pressure in the toilet was very strong and hot water available at all times (except during the blackout insidence)

7. Water dispenser available at the lobby to supply drinking water - both, hot and cold water

8. The hotel reception is manned all the time. So if you have questions or need their service, there would be no problem.

There are quite a number of hotels near Kartika Hotel. So maybe you could survey those rooms before you decide to stay in this one. Also try to see other room types in this hotel to get better room.

If not for the poor air ventilation, i would give this hotel 4 rating instead of just two.

Room tip: Get room with window that could open to outside, room away from the road to avoid noise, and hopefully with functioning air ventilation and with no one smoke outside your room.

I stayed there for a night on 27 Jan 2013 with 5 of my friends.
The hotel is located in the crowd of city but quite in the room. There are 2 types of room available here, with fan (80idr) and with ac(180idr). We took the rooms with fan. The room is warm with twin bed and a table. Not so small, yet not so large. The shared bathrooms are in the first floor hence our rooms are in the second floor.
It gives a good room for a reasonable price. IT IS RECOMMENDED
