What this hotel does, it does very well. But make sure it’s what you are looking for first. If you want a lively all-inclusive resort, with great service and a decent choice of restaurants, then you’ll probably love it. But if you want somewhere peaceful, and you want to relax rather than party, you may want to look elsewhere. We are a family of four, including children aged 7 and 6, and stayed at Dreams Riviera in April this year.

The hotel was busy when we were there, but it does seem to have the capacity to deal with it well. We never had to queue for a table or even wait long for a drink. However, do not make the mistake of thinking the photos on the website of a pool with a handful of loungers are representative: they were three deep round the pool when we were there. It therefore felt rather crowded. While we always found loungers somewhere, the best spots were reserved by the usual books and bottles of sun tan lotion from very early in the morning, despite the hotel’s official policy that reserving loungers is not permitted. There were several weddings and other parties during our stay. This meant relatively large groups of guests taking full advantage of the free drinks, and noise in the evenings from discos and bands. Some guests even brought their own speakers to the pool, meaning a battle between the pretty loud official DJ and their own music. It wasn’t relaxing by the pools at all as a result of the noise. The music in the evening stopped relatively early, so it was never an issue in terms of getting to sleep, but it was a problem if you wanted to relax on your balcony or even in your room. If noise pollution bothers you, my recommendation would be to look elsewhere.

There are three pools in total. However, none of them is a swimming pool in the proper sense of the term. One is an activity pool, used for ball games, aqua zumba and other entertainment. One is a shallow children’s pool. Finally, the infinity pool was really a drinking pool, with large numbers of guests drinking cocktails from the swim-up bar, partying and even occasionally smoking. If you actually wanted to swim, it wasn’t really possible for most of the time. We spent more time on the beach, which was quieter, but we’d have preferred to spend time by a pool where the children could swim safely while in our view.

The beach has fine, soft white sand. The sea was warm and relatively calm when we were there, but there were red flags flying to warn of currents and white ones to warn of jellyfish (although we didn’t see any ourselves). There is a lot of seaweed, as several other reviewers have mentioned. This is cleared from the beach regularly and there was not a noticeable smell when we were there. However, it is still in the sea itself, which clearly makes it less pleasant to swim or paddle in than if it wasn’t there at all. There are watersports available, and we took a hobie cat out accompanied by one of the staff, which was fun and only cost us a tip. There is a small children’s play area, beach volleyball and football (soccer) goals.

We found the restaurants generally to have enough choice not to feel bored over the course of a week. The food was good quality, but a little generic despite their best attempts at each theme. We ate in the main World Café buffet restaurant for breakfast. There was plenty of choice, and the service was generally good. We used Seaside Grill or Oceana for lunch, both close to the pools and beach, and table service. The selection was more limited (think burgers, hot dogs, burritos, steaks and fish), but it was handy and a nice way to escape the lunchtime sun. We tried Portofino (Italian), Himitsu (Asian) and Bordeaux (French, adults-only) in the evening. Himitsu was our favourite, while we thought Bordeaux was trying too hard. We also took advantage of room service a couple of times, and this was a handy option with reasonable choice and no extra charge. The Coco Café served coffees and smoothies, and offered ice cream from 12 noon until 8pm.

The bars all offered an excellent selection of drinks and great service. The all-inclusive deal is comprehensive, including everything except premium wines as far as we could tell. Wines by the glass were included, and the merlot was particularly drinkable, so we didn’t bother to upgrade given the marginal cost of doing so was quite high. There were plenty of non-alcoholic cocktail options, so even the children felt like they were getting a treat.

We booked a Preferred Club Ocean View room, which is billed as suitable for two adults and two children. However, when we arrived, we quickly realised it was not really large enough for our family. There wasn’t enough storage space for a week’s worth of clothes for more than two, and the bathroom was effectively part of the room (glass doors separated the toilet and shower, but the bath and basins were part of the main room). After one night, we upgraded to a Master Suite, which was much larger, with separate bedroom, living room and bathroom. It also seemed to have been decorated more recently as the first room was a little tired. It was on the end of one of the blocks, directly looking over the sea, whereas the original room’s ocean view was to the side. We were offered the upgrade for much less than the headline marginal cost, and a little haggling saw them reduce it a bit more. I’m so glad we did as it made our time in the room much more pleasant. The only real complaint we had about the room we moved to was that the water pressure (and therefore the temperature of the shower) was inconsistent.

The Preferred Club offered a few extras, but I’m not sure they were worth it. The Preferred Club Lounge offered food outside the normal times, but there’s no shortage of food anyway. It also supposedly offered premium drinks, but I don’t know what there was over and above the other bars. Finally, there was a special area on the beach reserved for preferred club guests, but this was always full so we never got to take advantage. Apparently the main benefit of this area was that the waiting staff could fetch snacks as well as drinks. You also get to check-out at 1pm rather than 12 noon.

The Explorer’s Club was great, with friendly staff, good facilities and plenty of activities organised (you get a timetable for the following day in your room each evening). You can dip in and out without booking, and they will look after (and feed) your children until 10pm if you want a romantic meal. Our children used it almost every day (at their request) for varying lengths of time, and really enjoyed themselves.

The spa had good facilities, and friendly staff. It was so good that my wife made three trips during the week. It’s not cheap on the face of it, but the numerous offers made it better value.

While the official guidance on tipping is that gratuities are not expected for food and drink service, we found tips were common and appreciated. A high proportion of the guests are from the US, where tipping is clearly a part of life, and therefore it seems to be the norm at the hotel. There was never a problem when we didn’t have any suitable change and you don’t need to tip every round, but budget for modest tips over the course of your stay and you’ll likely find the service slightly better as a result. Note that everything in the hotel works in US dollars, with dollars and pesos accepted as payment. There is a cash machine that dispenses US dollars, but charges for the privilege. For the things you do have to put your hand in your pocket for, there is always some sort of offer or deal: two-for-one massages, a free beach bag with your suntan lotion, 30% off room upgrades. The shops are still not cheap though, and it’s worth bringing your own sun tan lotion for example. Make sure you pick up the vouchers from the VIP desks as well. There is an on-site doctor, who was very friendly and helpful with my son’s ear infection, if a little on the expensive side.

There is excellent, free and quite fast wi-fi coverage throughout the hotel, including the outside areas. You are limited to three connections per room though, which is potentially an issue if you have more devices as it means logging in and out to connect each device.

This is a good hotel. We enjoyed our stay. The facilities are excellent, the staff are friendly and the food is good. It’s also decent value considering what is included. However, it is lively and noisy, rather than peaceful and relaxing. So make sure it’s what you’re looking for before you book.

Room tip: Ocean view room was a bit small for a family of four, master suite worth the upgrade

We went to Dreams Riviera Cancun Resort in February for a friends wedding. the resort is beautiful and the staff and service is wonderful. There are at least one or two weddings each day so a bit of a wedding factory but if you like watching this is a good place to go. Our friends wedding was spectacular attended by 40 of us, we spent 10 days there with 5 days before the wedding relaxing by the pool and going to town for the hen night then a few days relaxing after the wedding. As there were quite a few young children in our party we spent a fair bit of time around the childrens pool which is the most ideal pool I have seen for toddlers, it is large but shallow enough for them to be safe, Other facilities include an infinity pool with bar, another pool where there are daily activities going on, luxury spa, beach with volleyball and bar, nightclub, lovely reception bar with nightly entertainment and plenty of other things you can book through reception. There is a kids club with different things going on each day to keep them amused with nice friendly staff . There are nine different places to eat so something to suit everyone and we found them all really nice, It was a nice surprise that all nine of them are included in the all inclusive price which is not true of other resorts I have been too, there is also an ice cream/ coffee shop and poolside fast food places all included oh and not forgetting 24 hour room service !. We had an ocean view suite which was absolutely wonderful with Jacuzzi bath both inside and out on the balcony, huge bed, small kitchen with dining table and lounge area. We had all the bridesmaids (nine of them ) get ready in the room and then the bride so was glad we chose this room. We had originally thought that we had booked a room with its own plunge pool and was a bit disappointed when we got there and found we hadn't so upgraded to the suite. After seeing the rooms with pools- some of which are just not private enough and have cold water in the pools-we were glad we didn't have one. Because they have so many weddings they are very good at setting them up and the whole experience was brilliant but the only down side I would say is that they do charge for every little thing and its by no means cheap ! All in all it was one of the best resort holidays we have been on

Room tip: if you can, go for an ocean view suite

Stayed here after moving from Dreams Tulum. It is SO much nicer than Dreams Tulum. The rooms are very comfortable, grounds are beautiful, service and food are excellant. The beach has some seaweed but better also and you can walk for miles. Take the bike trip to Puerto Morelos, very fun and great little town. Lester and all the entertainment people are so nice and work so hard. Pools are great with great drink service, food was great also.

Be confident that Lester would be delighted to learn that you have acknowledged his hard work and that we are proud to have him as part of the Dreams Riviera team.

We truly appreciate that you decide to visit our property after staying in our sister property, we definitely consider that each resort has something different that made all resorts unique according to our guests likes and preference. Trust that we will share your comments with the proper directors of our sister property, nevertheless please do not hesitate to give them another chance as we definitely consider that they will be able to surprise you with their service and special feature to offer.

As per your impressions about the sea would like to share that the seaweed is due to the coral reef natural reproduction season. We do everything that is in our hands to decrease this with a continual cleaning program twice a day to decrease the impact on our guests vacations, however as this is a natural condition we try do not have any impact on the environment with our cleaning program. We truly appreciate your understanding on this matter.

On the other hand we will be honored and more than looking forward to welcome you back and keep adding memories to your family travel experiences.

Please do not hesitate to contact us through our Social Media when you plan to visit us again in order to offer you personalize assistance prior arrival.

We visited Dreams Riviera Cancun for our second anniversary in April. It was as wonderful as we'd come to expect after visiting 3 other Dreams Resorts in Mexico. Always great food and great service at every turn. We splurged for thek preferred club because we wanted an ocean view room. The club room staff bent over backwards. The club area at the beach is kind of a joke other than they may receive better service. Other spots are less crowded and generally available. Carlos was amazing trudging thru the sand to bring everyone drinks at the edge of the infinity pool. Our room was an odd number room in building one. It faced outside the resort and was very private and quiet. We really enjoyed the jacuzzi on the balcony. We had a fabulous week and would recommend DRC to anyone.
