Breathtaking scenery but you do need decent hiking boots and be reasonably fit. My 12 year old grandson and I did it in 3 and half hours because we needed to catch the 11.30 boat. Don’t try that unless you are super fit and prepared to run a lot of the way. The normal boat to take is at 5.30 and that makes the walk much easier. It is closed till from October till May and they close it when it rains. We were the 1st down that day and were lucky to see a family of Ibex. At one point the gorge is only 3.5 metres wide with rocks towering over 300 meters in each side. SPECTACULAR. It’s very well organised and although some days 3000 people go through the gorge. Anyway it’s a must if visiting Crete.

I read somewhere that most of the people who complain about this hike are out of shape and shouldn't do it. I think this is probably true. It is not a simple or easy hike. It is almost entirely downhill and the first 3 km or so are very steep. So if you have not done an y hiking in the last six months, and if you haven't walked 10 km or more in the last year, then you probably shouldn't try this hike unless you are prepared to be sore and very, very tired.

The hike itself is hard, but not impossible. The scenery is gorgeous. This all said, I think it is not as impressive as, say Yosemite NP in California or Zion NP in Utah. But, it is a fun experience and it is a fun thing to do on Crete.

After the hike the ferry trip to the bus stop was great, as was the leisurely meal in the town at the end waiting for the ferry. It is a very full day, but well worth it.

Bottom line, if you like being outdoors and like hiking, do it! If you think you would rather be shopping, then you should probably go shopping.

Beautiful scenery, Spectacular views. We took the tour a few days ago. Make sure you have proper footwear. The path is rocky and at times steep. Bring a small bottle of water. There are plenty spots were you can fill up your bottle with water on the way. There are rest areas so bring snacks/ food and juice/iso drinks, since there is no possibility to buy food within the 10 mile/16 km walk. There are Tavernas/restaurants in Agia Roumeli.

I can't add too much more on the scenery or hike - beautiful and varied, moderate hike if you're an experienced walker. We did it by public transport to and from a Chania. I'd encourage you to price check. We had to take a taxi into town (10) then the bus (15€ each) then entry (5) then the ferry (12.50) then another bus (8.50) then back to hotel (either bus or taxi). So check with the private tours what is included. Public transport does add up. The other thing - check the ferry timetable! Currently there's only one afternoon departure at 1730 so we were left with over 2 hours to kill in the tiny town it leaves from. Would've been better to take our time in the canyon a little. We left our hotel at 7am and got back just around 9pm so it's a long day. Highly recommend but do take th time to do some research.

This arduous 13km walk is amazing. We started at 10.00 and completed the walk five hours later. It was magnificent. Wear sturdy shoes and be prepared to sweat a bit! The views are breathtaking as are the smells and sounds of Crete. A wonderful day of walking! Get the coach to Omalou from Chania then the boat from Agia Roumeli to Chora. Sfakion and then head to the coach car park and get the coach back to Chania. You will have a long day, but it’s worth every minute
