“Stunning Views, Lovely Open Architecture, Great Location”
Reviewed 9 January 2016 for a stay in December 2015

Our extended family of 6 late-middle-aged fogies and 4 young adults stayed at Wild Orchid for two weeks. Everyone simply loved it. We were all convinced that it would be tough to top Wild Orchid, despite a few concerns, described below. We would all love to return.

VIEWS - The views from Wild Orchid are simply stunning. The estate is perched high atop the far northwestern reaches of St Lucia, with 270 degrees of ocean views stretching southward down the coast to Pigeon Island and northward towards Martinique. None of us ever tired of sitting on the verandas and soaking it all in.

ARCHITECTURE - Wild Orchid has a lovely open architecture, with high vaulted ceilings and many large arched doorways opening onto an expansive veranda overlooking the pool, gardens, and hills and oceans beyond. The house has 5 bedrooms: the beautiful master bedroom alone commanding the top floor, two sizable bedrooms on the main, and two smaller bedrooms in the apartment on the ground floor. The kitchen on the main floor is nicely laid out and spacious.

LOCATION - In addition to the stunning views, there's a lot to recommend about Wild Orchid's location, particularly the easy access to beaches, shopping, and restaurants.

Beaches: Best, it is only a 10-minute (though somewhat steep) walk along quiet roads (more like driveways) and an established pathway down to the beautiful beach of BodyHoliday/LeSport (N.B., all beaches in St. Lucia must offer open, public access). Just a bit further to the south is the secluded beach of the Cap Maison resort, which would be walkable, too, though we always chose to make the quick 5-minute drive. This beach faces north, which is nice, since the cliffs provide lots of shade, even in the middle of the day (at least in the winter) and since the beach gets a bit of wave action from the prevailing northerly winds. Even further to the south, but still less than a 10-minute drive, there are several nice, public beaches arching down from Pigeon Island to Gros Islet. These beaches are notable for their appealing mix of tourist and local use.

Groceries: There are several reasonably-priced and well-stocked supermarkets along Rodney Bay, all about just a 10-minute drive down from the hill.

Restaurants & Bars: There is an abundance of possibilities in Gros Islet and Rodney Bay.

Note that for our party of 10, we rented two vehicles directly from Hewanorra Airport: a small minivan that sat up to 8 and a small sedan that sat up to 5. Having flexible transportation was essential to our enjoying our stay. Getting out and about to shop for groceries, to eat, to see the sights, to snorkle, etc. would have been next to impossible without the rentals (from Drive-A-Matic, which worked out well for us). Hewanorra Airport is a 1.5 hour drive away.

STAFF: The primary staff at Wild Orchid consisted of Marge (aka Philomene), the cook/housekeeper, and Dragon, the groundskeeper/maintenance man, both occasionally assisted by other helpers. Both of them were very pleasant, professional, and hardworking. Marge was particularly helpful in making our stay a good one. We worked closely with her in planning the schedule for and content of our meals (N.B., we were responsible for purchasing all of our foodstuffs). We particularly enjoyed Marge's creole breakfast of eggs, floats (like the beignets popular in New Orleans), and saltfish, and her delicious brined and roasted turkey, which she prepared a day early for our Christmas feast. We usually had Marge take responsibility for one meal per day, either breakfast or dinner. Her working day is supposed to end in the mid-afternoon, so when she made dinner, she left the prepared dishes for us to heat up at dinner time. Taking responsibility for cooking and kitchen cleaning and house cleaning for 10 people is quite a large task. Some days, when Marge was without additional help, she worked well past her normal ending time in order to finish everything, which we thought was going beyond the call of duty. She clearly takes much well-deserved pride in her work.

SECURITY: Security is a concern staying at a somewhat isolated, luxurious island estate. We were careful to follow the security procedures documented in the Wild Orchid's renter's guide as closely as possible and were happy not to suffer any unfortunate security-related incident.

There was one major flaw, however, in the security arrangements that really needs to be fixed by the owners: there is no way to disable the alarm system from the ground floor apartment. This means that there's no reasonable way to turn on the nighttime alarm when the ground floor apartment is occupied. If the alarm were enabled under such circumstances, then the ground floor residents would be stuck inside the apartment until such time as someone from the main house were to get around to disabling the alarm. If a ground floor resident were to forget about this nasty restriction and exit the apartment, as soon as they entered the pool area to gain access to the main house, they would trip the alarms and provoke mayhem (i.e., earsplitting sirens and intervention by the house's security service). Because of this flaw, since we had residents of the ground floor apartment throughout our stay, we were unable to use the nighttime alarm, which left us feeling much less protected than we would have felt had we been able to engage it. We were unsettled by the lack of nighttime protection and strongly urge the owners to fix this flaw by adding a secondary alarm console to the ground floor apartment.

We did experience one minor security-related incident, which is worth relating since it reflects well on the security service employed by Wild Orchid. Soon after we first arrived, well into the evening, one of our youths saw an unknown individual within the confines of the gated estate, peering into the side yard over a hedge. She approached him from the other side of the hedge, inquiring if she could be of any assistance. He replied that he was just looking around to see who was there and then quickly exited. We informed the security service at once and within minutes an imposing security guard with a sizable sidearm arrived to inspect the estate and review the security procedures with us. We had been unsettled by the presence of an unknown individual on the estate and were relieved, at least, by the responsiveness and professionalism of the guard. The following morning, the same guard came by to make sure that everything had been in order since his visit the previous evening and to inform us that we had failed to engage the nighttime alarm. We explained that we couldn't engage it, because of the aforementioned security flaw, but again we were impressed and heartened to know that the security service was monitoring things so carefully.

MOSQUITOES: We were concerned about mosquitoes from the get-go, having read about the prevalence of the nasty Chikungunya virus throughout the Caribbean, including St. Lucia. We were particularly concerned about the situation at Wild Orchid, given comments from prior reviewers as well as the open architecture of the estate. Prior to placing our deposit for our rental, we received assurances that all of the bedrooms were air conditioned with proper sealing to prevent the entry of mosquitoes, but upon arrival, we found that not to be the case for the two main-floor bedrooms, both of which have windows with large wooden louvers, which close, but definitely not snugly enough to ensure that the nasty little critters cannot get in. The master bedroom on the top floor, on the other hand, also has very similar louvered windows, but each one has carefully-installed external, fine-mesh plastic screening, which seemed very effective in keeping out the pests. So, given the serious risks of a dangerous disease like Chikungunya, what possible reason could there be for neglecting to install proper screening throughout all of the bedrooms? Of course, for the rest of the estate's open rooms and verandas, the only solution is to apply mosquito repellent or instead just try to ignore the occasional bites and hope for the best. But it would be nice, at least, in the bedrooms, if there were no need to resort either to toxins or worry.

BTW, we decided to proceed with our rental, despite our concern about mosquitoes, because our stay was scheduled just on the cusp of the dry season, when the mosquito population would likely be in decline and the risk of Chikungunya along with it. That seemed to be the case. A number of us are "mosquito magnets", some of whom were diligent in applying repellent, but others were willing to just take their chances. The biting did not to turn out to be too frequent or bothersome. We all agreed that we had experienced very much worse problems with mosquitoes in the northeast US, though, of course, without the risk of disease. Anyway, one week after our return, none of us has showed any symptoms of Chikungunya and according to the CDC, the typical incubation period is just 3-7 days.

WI-FI: Simply put, the Internet access of the estate stinks. First of all, the bandwidth of the service is limited. It might be adequate for a few users, but once 5-10 individuals get going on their digital devices, the service seems to grind to a halt. Of course, it's possible that no local ISP provides higher bandwidth service to the far reaches of the Cap Estate area or perhaps no local ISP has sufficient capacity within its carrier network, but if there's any way to provide a higher bandwidth service to the estate, then it really ought to be done. Furthermore, the reach of the Wi-Fi is just miserable - obtaining a good signal requires sitting near the puny router in the great room. None of the bedrooms have anything better than intermittent Wi-FI access and the same is the case for the much of the veranda, except for the parts closest to the great room. Is there any reason that a superior Wi-FI router or Wi-Fi range extender could not be deployed in order to provide guests with a reliable signal throughout all the rooms of the estate?

MINOR/MISCELLANEOUS: Some of our princes/princesses complained about the beds being too hard; others thought they were just right. Many thought that the sheets were a bit worn out and nubby. The hot water appears to be heated by passive solar panels on the roof, obviously good from an ecological perspective, but with 10 guests, we frequently ran out of hot water in the evening; the saving grace in that is that a cool shower isn't such a bad thing in the tropics! The water pressure in the master suite was very weak.

“Beautiful villa with spectacular views”
Reviewed 23 November 2014 for a stay in November 2014

We have just returned from a ten day stay at the Wild Orchid Villa St Lucia (party of 6). The villa was spacious and well kept and we had a wonderful time (mosquito bites a bit of a nuisance but that's the tropics for you!!). The two downstairs en suite bedrooms were adequate and the master bedroom very spacious with a wonderful shower view overlooking pigeon island. The only bad thing we could say about the property was that the kitchen was in need of an upgrade. There were 6 of us and the toaster had only 2/4 slots working, the cooker was quite dangerous in that the switches stuck and we were never sure if the gas was on or off and all the kitchen equipment was in need of replacement. If you go here make sure you clarify exactly what the housekeeper/gardener are meant to do and what hours to work as we were never quite sure so I would suggest this is written down somewhere so you can ask them to do certain things (i.e. clean the pool - we were unsure if it was meant to be left or done and had to ask after a week of it being left), we would have preferred to do our own clothes washing but the washing machine was in a locked room so we were asked to pay the housekeeper to do it which we did not mind but some people might mind!. Whilst we were there we were robbed by a crafty thief who presumably used the pool net to scoop our bag and camera and coat etc out of the property. The representative Margaritte from Tropical Villas was absolutely wonderful/efficient/on the ball and chased everything for us at the drop of a hat. We could not have had a better rep. All in all though this is a beautiful property and despite the above minor hiccups we had a wonderful and fun holiday. Would recommend the villa but hope the owners give the kitchen a overhaul.
P.S. St Lucia is beautiful and paradise if you have money - not so good for the locals who don't.

“Spectacular Views”
Reviewed 2 December 2013 for a stay in November 2013

I enjoyed my stay at Wild Orchid. Dragon the grounds keeper was pleasant, quiet, and quickly addressed anything that we requested. Please note, you must let them know two or three days ahead of time if you want the pool to be heated.

Jennifer, the housekeeper and chef was amazing also. She was so pleasant. The food was great and she showed us some great beaches to visit as well. We sat down with her upon our arrival, planned our meals, made a grocery list and went shopping and most of the brands in the grocery store were USA brands. We enjoyed so many traditional dishes and her roti, dahl puri and palau were among my favorites. Some of the appliances in the kitchen were older but they all worked with the exception of the toaster oven but that could have been operator error on our part. They also provided a water cooler with purified cold water.

There is only one reason why I did not give this property 5 stars.....the mosquitoes were abundant. The first night we received a number of bites but we let Dragon and Jennifer know the next day and the foggers came to the neighborhood. We also went and purchased "Off Deep Woods" insect repellant and "Cintronella" candles. After that, it was much better. So get those things on DAY 1!!! In addition, it was difficult to get WIFI reception in the bedrooms.

The best thing about this property other than the welcoming vibe that Dragon and Jennifer set are the views. You have a 180 degree ocean view of the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea from the master bedroom. The ocean views from the outdoor areas are stunning during the day and evening as well. A massage therapist came to the house for a very reasonable fee. Here name is Susie and was recommended by the property manager, Margareet. The property is about a 2 hour drive from the international airport. GPS is very helpful because there are limited street signs and the directions provided were not always clear. Rodney Bay is only 5 minutes away and had lots of restaurants and night life. We have already planned our return trip next year.

“Wonderfully relaxing location”

Wild Orchid is set in beautiful gardens with a very scenic vista from the kidney shaped pool overlooking Pigeon Island. The villa is located in a scenic area and is close to two beaches both accessible via flights of stairs.

Dragon (the groundsman) maintains the grounds to an exceptional standard. He showed us where the Hummingbirds bathe, told us about the plants and trees and even offered a few tips on where to visit.

Jennifer (housekeeper) keeps the villa clean and in order. The food she prepared was good but beware her list of required ingredients was often wrong (meaning multiple trips to Super Js - to swap, replace items). We prepared most of our own meals (breakfasts, lunches in the end with Jennifer simply preparing salads/vegetables/rice. She did however make Pork Rotis - which we heated one night for dinner.

The villa has a washing machine - but guests are not allowed to use it - you can pay extra for Jennifer to wash clothes. The kitchen is adequate but there is no dishwasher. Do not leave anything out as birds will fly in as the villa is open plan.

Bring lots of mosquito repellant with you - we did and still have large numbers of bites!
