Admittedly the front of the hotel doesn’t look its best - scaffolding and empty window openings! But step through the automatic sliding door and you’re into another world. There is little sign of the massive renovation works going on - maybe a bit of dust but there is an army of cleaners dealing with that.
The staff are great and make every effort to make sure that everything runs well.
The pool on the roof is just about complete and looks fantastic and the views are great.
The food in the Bellini Restaurant is varied and very good quality - the Maltese rabbit stew is probably the best I’ve ever tasted. The restaurant staff are friendly and attentive. Good local wines available at reasonable prices.
The hotel is great now and will be even better when the work is complete.
I would love to return.

We booked this hotel for its lovely looking rooftop pool and spa facilities to enjoy for a week from 9th June. However, when we turned up the front of the hotel was covered in scaffolding and clearly wasn’t even close to being finished. Building works started at 6:30am every day, going on until 6 or 7pm most evenings. This, along with the annoying elevator chiming and the doors beeping when not closed properly, did not make for a good nights sleep.

We were advised that we could use the facilities at the sister hotel, The Pergola, which was a short walk away and very nice. However, having booked to stay in a hotel with both an indoor and outdoor pool, a gym and spa facilities, this was not really good enough compensation.

Our room looked like it had not yet been touched in the renovations, it was quite dated but cleaned as well as could be expected with all of the building dust. There was a balcony of sorts, but as we were on the ground floor it looked out at a brick wall and was constantly covered in debris from the building works.

I think that the hotel should take some responsibility for the delays in the building work - this hotel was not suitable for guests to be staying in, yet there we were. We were given a complimentary boat trip by the hotel as compensation, along with the insistence that they had informed the travel agent of the delays in the renovations. When we booked through Loveholidays there was no indication at all that there were any renovations taking place.

The staff were so friendly and helpful about our fairly regular complaints, they could not do enough to help us and try to improve our stay.

The food was also quite good, we had breakfast every day and dinner one night. With dinner we paid a little extra to upgrade to all inclusive drinks which was a lovely touch.

Overall I would potentially come back to this hotel in a year or so once finished, but I would book directly with the hotel. It seems like it will be a lovely place once finished, in an ideal location. Having checked their website it seems that they were transparent about the renovation works, I just wish I had checked before booking.

Thank you so much to all the kind staff at the Solana.

This is quite a difficult review to write. The hotel clearly has issues with late finishing works and the hotel senior management are badly at fault for accepting bookings and refusing compensation on the premise that full facilities are available at the sister hotel. It is not good enough. To add to that we were lied to the week before we arrived, being told the works would be complete on the roof. The truth of the matter was that we only had a room, a buffet restaurant and a lobby bar as facilities. No pool, nowhere to sit outside, no spa. Not what we had paid full price for.

Having said all that, we complained long and hard and after 2 days, the hotel arranged for us to move to the sister hotel the Pergola which I have reviewed separately, so they did the right thing in the end.

It should be said that the staff, including the acting manager at the time, were superb. A special mention to Katrina who moved heaven and earth to try to satisfy us.

This hotel was and will be brilliant. But only when it can offer the facilities it says it can and doesn't try to deceive its customers by saying works are complete when they are not.
The rooftop pool and bar area will be stunning and they have a great team there.

Room Tip: Wait until building works are complete

Dear Guest,

We are thankful that you have chosen the Solana Hotel for your recent visit to Malta and while we regret reading that your stay with us was not as enjoyable as one would have expected, we appreciate that you have shared with us your honest review.

Admittedly certain on-going works during the time of your stay, could have been detrimental to one's overall well-being at the Hotel and while we offered alternatives to our sister-hotel, we are well aware that this is not the same as having the facilities available on site.

While we cannot take back what has now happened in the past, we would really appreciate if you could allow us another chance to regain your trust. We are confident that given another try for a future visit, we will not only make it up to you, but we will also succeed in exceeding your expectations.

We look forward to hearing again from you soon.

Yours Sincerely,

This is not my first time in Malta so I have seen a couple of hotels in different locations. This time I have chosen Mellieha as I wanted to be close to the beach and I opted for Solana hotel as it is located in the centre of the village so it's easy to go and do shopping or go out for a drink etc.
I was given a large and nice brand new room. Stuff is very friendly and helpful. I used to like watching sunsets by the pool with the glass of local wine. I highly recommend this hotel.

Surprised to be given a free room upgrade on arrival and when we asked about it we were told that these were being given in view of the works that the hotel was still undergoing. This is a family run hotel and we had the opportunity to befriend the owner who took us to see the pool area, which was still closed but which is almost ready. They told us it will open in 2-3 days because they are still waiting for some marble works. The view from up there is stunning – almost as if you’re on a helicopter overlooking the village. Brilliant staff, very friendly. Yes yes yes thumbs up Solana – genuine prices, great service and excellent food. Will come back for sure.

Dear Guest,

Thank you for having chosen the Solana Hotel for your recent accommodation in Malta and we are pleased to read that you have not only enjoyed your stay with us, but you also intend to revisit us in the future!

As you have correctly mentioned, we still have some minor interior works on-going, however we are trying our very best not to affect our guests' well-being in any negative way. At first glance, one can understandably be worried upon seeing the facade, however, we we wish to assure our esteemed future guests that none of these uncompleted rooms are in use, and the same area is only visible from the external main road, thus is not impeding the views from the balconies in any way.

The pool is now almost finished! Kindly follow us by liking our Facebook page for photos and updates. We are very excited!

Looking forward to welcoming you back very soon.

Yours Sincerely,

Pierre Agius
