We had a rainy day so it wasn’t ideal but we enjoyed the scenery anyway. It got us back into Bergen in time as well.

The Flåm railway lives up to its reputation of being extremely scenic and it certainly is. It can get very crowded but thankfully we were catching it first thing in the morning on our way out of town and there was plenty of room inside .

Arrived by P&O Aurora, 8am, left at 4.30pm but plenty of time to take a trip on the railway.
The ship docked in port & the walk to the station was 5 mins on flat surface.
The station displays all the train times & how many seats are available, we paid 550kr (about £55/60) & there was plenty of choice of trains at different times despite our ship & another being in port. We took the 9.45am.
Same tour as ship but cheaper, of course there is a small risk that there may be no seats so decide how important it is to you.
Agree with other readers, the right side is best for views.
Worth getting off at the waterfall stop, wait for the music & look up & to the right, I shall say no more, listen for the whistle & board the train.
Nothing to do at the top so take your photos & board again. Another train came in while we were there & then there was a rush for seats,so move quickly if another train approaches & sit down.
Remember even on a very warm day it can get cooler the higher you go.
A beautiful train ride, although there are quite a few tunnels which could disappoint? However, if you want the experience of saying - 'I have been on the Flam Railway' then this is for you.

We rode this train as part of the Sognefjord in a Nutshell tour. People started lining up to get on the train about 10 minutes before the train arrived. Our tickets were checked before we got on the train (by the chain at the beginning of the li e) and while on the train, so keep your ticket handy. I feel that the right side had more water views, but the scenery is gorgeous either way. There were not assigned seats, so if you are in a group, you will want to try to be one of the first people on the train. The train stopped by a lovely waterfall for 5 minutes to allow you to take photos. If you will be trying to take photos while on the train, I would suggest sitting by a window that may be opened instead of trying to take a photo through the glare of the glass. Overall, a nice ride.

This is a fantastic journey through amazing scenery - rivers, waterfalls, mountains. Our train was not overcrowded (we journeyed in the afternoon) so it was nice and relaxed.
