Our guide had made a reservation at Bertus Basson's restaurant at the Spice Route for us.

The restaurant was billed as South African cuisine.

The menu is quite extensive but we had Boerrie Roll and Lamb Ribs. The Boerrie Roll is Bertus' version of a North American Hot Dog. It was filling and came with sides. Enough for lunch.

It was an experience and good tasty food.

I had high expectations and was keen to visit one of Bertus Basson Restaurant after seeing him on TV
The venue was great ,the service was great
but the food was very disappointing
The vetkoek was stale and the lamb stew so fatty there was hardly any meat
One dish had no meat and was sent back
There excuse was it is prepacked and they were happy to replace it. This time bobotie. I tasted it and was too sweet
Nothing like I am used to

Stay away. There is no soul. No one in charge. Wonder how involved Bertus is??

The first thing I thought when we arrived: we will have a good time here indeed! The place is mesmerising well organised with a good staff.
The landscape surrounding it is absolutely hypnotising!
The food was great and the wines superb!

The restaurant is serving very good food and we enjoyed it a lot. Also nearby is beer, gin and chocolate tasting. But the view is so nice that it would pay off to go there even if the food was awful.

A South African menu conjours up very varied ideas..... home cooking, none to exciting ... but pleasantly surprised we were. What was presented to us was nothing short of amazing.
Sunday set menu is a touch of flavour, unexpected elements in truly South African dishes.

We thoroughly enjoyed the surprise replacement for bread... vetkoek with biltong butter and smoked snoek pate.

For starters we were given pickled fish, etchy salad and BBQ spiced ribs. Tantalising -

This was followed by roast beef & (not so South African) yorkshire pud, carrots, pumpkin fritter, roast potators, peanut-sticky chicken... deliciously different flavours.

Finishing off this meal with Apple Crumble (on the side), vanilla custard and ice cream made a suitable impression on us all.

The portions were perfect. The service excellent. Views unending.

A restaurant to recommend as one of the best!
