“Haugesund's main street has discreet charms”
Review of Haraldsgata street

Haraldsgata street
Reviewed 28 August 2017

Haugesund has a small town 'feel' & its main street has the feel of the main street of a small town; the very limited shopping opportunities on this street are unlikely to excite anyone who isn't coming from a small village in western Norway; what discreet charms Haraldsgata has are to the east of the main shopping area; if you continue on beyond the end of the few blocks of shopping street, you'll find some very fine 19th century houses & apartment buildings that are worth a half hour stroll on a sunny day.

Her you can go shooping in a great sortement of stores. Visit coofehouses and sitt fore a while in a park looking at the freindly people living in Haugesund. Sumertime there are different aktivitets in the street, spesialy at saterdays.the street are only two blooks from the habor, there you can by fresh seafood, or visit different restaurants along the habor.

On a sunny day it's a Nice walk through Haraldsgata. There are shops on both sides and you can find Nice coffee shops and cake shops a long the street.

I am being kind by giving the main street of Haugesund a "2" rating. The buildings in the street are a mixture of the old and the appalling new, built back in the 60's or so.
Whilst a few of the owners of the properties maintain the outside fasade, many, many do not.
The opening times are almost appalling, something that the shopowners are also responsible for.
The street has many empty shops, deserted due to the insanity of building a comfortable indoor shopping centre outside of the town.
On days that it rains - very often here on the west coast, the street can be virtually deserted.
There was a time when one could imagine this street on a Saturday, 50 or 60, 70 years ago, full of friends and neighbours, shopping and swapping the local gossip. It is certainly not a feeling that you get now.
