Evreux is a pleasant small town in the Normandy an hour and half drive by car from Paris and an hour by train (non stop ) to Paris St Lazare station. There aren't much to do and bit boring unless you like the lay down quiet type of life. Probably the cathedral is the only thing in the place of interest. Overall not recommended unless your in the area

I visited by chance the town of Evreux since it was a good compromise for reaching Normandy leaving from Paris.
Actually it was a good choice because Evreux is worth a stop and its cathedral is worth a visit!
Huge, it is a good example of gothic style.
This lovely town should be known more...

Huge tall nave, airy interior, stained glass and carvings as would be expected in a provincial French city, yet as a musician, the west end of the cathedral proudly displayed a 2007 pipe organ which had an original organ case with large painted shutters by Pascal Quoirin. Would be good to hear this making music next time!

We went to Evreux only to stay overnight to break up a long journey, but it was a good choice!

Out for a walk we found the Cathedral, which is glorious. I think the leaflet described it as 'flamboyant Gothic', which seems about right. Lots of gothic pointed arches, but all with more 'stone lace' than I have ever seen before, outside and in. It is magnificent!

Inside it has many chapels lining the nave, mostly with woodwork from the time of Louis XIV, some even earlier. How it has all survived is mysterious to me, but there it is.

The stained glass windows of the nave and the transepts are equally wonderful, and equally old! They are worth a visit by themselves.

Then there is the Lady Chapel, built in the late 1400s. This has the most wonderful original stained glass, built into stonework in the shape of fleurs-de-lys.

The organ at the west end of the cathedral is a bit of a surprise. It is modern, very modern, as in only about 5 years old. It makes no attempt to look Gothic and the result is tremendous. I wish we had been there to hear it played.

It was also interesting to be told that the Devereux family, Earls of Essex, take their name from this town!
