Owner description: Bothwell Castle is the largest and finest 13th century stone castle in Scotland, much fought over during the Wars of Independence. Located in a beautiful setting overlooking the River Clyde, part of the original circular keep of Bothwell Castle survives. Find out about medieval Scotland by exploring the 13th century prison tower and the 14th century great hall and chapel. Open all year. Winter closed Thurs and Fri

We saw Bothwell one the last day of our vacation. Two weeks of touring Castles, churches, cathedrals and abbeys. Perhaps if it had been on the first day we would have been more impressed. While it does have some interesting architectural features, it was not a great castle. It was under substantial repairs at the time we went and there is little to explore. We were in and back out again in about 30 minutes.
If you are in the area and have the time, stop by for a look but, I would not make it a destination.

Beautiful castle. Great for dog walks etc. Lovely forest walks along the Clyde.
Close to golf club? Looks different every time you see it, winter summer etc.

We visited Bothwell Castle on Saturday afternoon. On arrival we were told they would not be charging admission as quite a bit of the castle is currently fenced off for restoration works. This was fair enough, but I bought a wee guide book anyway for £2.50. The young lady in the shop was polite and friendly. This is a truly beautiful castle - it is such a pity there was so much fencing up, but if you use your imagination and read the interpretation boards you can still get a lot out of a visit here. We will definitely return when most of the restoration is completed and hopefully spend a bit more time here.

We got there too late in the day as they were just closing the gate to the castle. We couldn't explore the interior but the exterior is exceptionally photogenic. The castle sits in a well manicured park-like setting. The red stone of the castle against the green grass and the waters of the surrounding moat is just beautiful. Glad we stopped.
