We actually stayed in the Villa Olive, which is above the let shown.
This was our first adventure into the Pyrenees and well worth the drive.
Villa Olive is smaller with 3 bedrooms and it's own pool. When we arrived Linda took us to the villa up a small track, the villa was very clean and comfortable and fully kitted with all the right utensils. The weather on arrival was a bit hot for me but the wife loved it, unfortunately it cooled down and we had a couple of damp days, which the locals were praying for, due to the lack of rain over the previous months. It did brighten up again, thankfully. Took a while to get used to the absolute quiet of the place, used to busy old UK, but once I did I slept vey well indeed.
The views across the valley from the villa are spectacular and I loved the way it was constantly changing as the sun moved across the sky, I must have at least 150+ photo's of the views to bore friends with!
They also have table tennis, which we loved playing before dipping in the pool, the perfect place to get away from it all and just chill.
Linda and Ian are lovely hosts and have an idyllic setting, I'm sure we'll be back some time.
We have been coming to this luxury private rental property for 10 years and it is a slice of heaven on earth. Set 850 meters up in the Pyrenees allowing you to drink in the spectacular views of the majestic mountains of the Vallespir all from your dining table on the patio. The accommodation is lovely, comfortable and practical with well appointed, tasteful decor and furnishings.
The large pool is fantastic and in the vast garden you can play table tennis or badminton. If thats too energetic for you you can recline on the sunbeds by the pool or sit in the shaded area or even swing in a relaxed fashion in the hammock.
Inside entertainment is good too, lots of dvds to choose from, a cupboard with board games, cards and a Bose sound dock so you can play your own music. The books available on the shelves cover a wide range of subjects and genres, something for everyone.
You can walk to Montferrer from The Mas should you want a nice coffee and fresh baguettes - just 10 minutes walk - the shop doubles as a bar and post office. There is a local restaurant in Montferrer called Le Diamant Noir - their gormet burgers are amazing but they also have a varied menu on offer. I would also recommend a visit to the stunning Roman Church in the Town.
The owners Linda and Ian are just perfect making sure you have everything you need then leaving you to your own devises, being totally discrete but there on hand should you need them.
The towns of Ceret, Amelie les Bains and Arles sur Tech are the nearest shops and offer a good choice of grocery shopping - there is a fabulous market in Ceret each Saturday where you can buy fantastic local produce - you are better going early to get a parking space but worth it - the corn fed chicken and local sausage are so tasty. We shop at Carrefour in Ceret and buy drink from Les Voutes in Amelie les Bains and for little extras needed between big shops we go to the Spar at Arles sur Tech.
If you feel energetic there are masses of places to visit (to be honest we never do because once up at The Mas we just want to stay there and recharge our batteries) You are an hour from the seaside of Colliere and the Medieval City of Carcasonne is two hours away and only less than an hour to Spain.
For those who love nature this place is awesome, great bird life including woodpeckers, eagles, buzzards and vultures, beautiful butterflies and lovely little lizards.
You do need a car for this holiday because of its remote location. We fly to Perpignan as its only 1 hour and 15 minutes drive to The Mas. Girona is only 2 hours drive and Barcelona is 2 and a half hours drive on good roads.
The Mas in my view is not particularly suitable for very young children or elderly persons who are not very mobile as there are steps to negotiate inside and outside the property.
This place is just amazing and totally relaxing.and there are not enough superlatives to describe this beautiful property and views. We think of it as a home from home.
My wife and I stayed in the Mas for a week in June. We loved the area which is in a beautiful part of the French Pyrenees and only some 10-15 minutes drive to the Spanish border.
Montferrer is the nearest village, just a 10 minute stroll up the road, where you will find a nice restaurant, cafe and post office. The locals seemed to be very welcoming and friendly. The closest town is Arles Sur Tech some 20 minutes drive where you will find a small supermarket and several restaurants.
The Mas is in a lovely setting with superb views,a huge swimming pool and very comfortably furnished with plenty of room. It was lovely to sit in the conservatory in the evening looking out over the hills. The owners are on hand to assist if required but will not disturb you.
The location is quite remote and off the tourist trail but it is well worth the drive. There are plenty of places to visit both locally and further afield in Spain and there are some nice walks starting from outside the property. The Med coast is about an hour's drive but we didn't get time to explore it as we spent quite a bit of our week relaxing at the Mas.
In summary we would recommend this property if you are looking for peace and quiet in stunning scenery.
We spent a wonderful holiday in this splendid place. The Mas is just fabulous, with an exquisite view of the mountains, a gorgeous swimming pool and a spacious green. We were welcomed by the very nice and discrete owners.
For anyone who wants a holiday with many diverse activities, this is the place to be: the seaside not too far away, the mountains with many trails, the Spanish hinterland, Figueres and further in Spain, Barcelona within reach,
The house offers a perfectly equipped kitchen, beautifully furnished rooms, an outdoor "kitchen à la plancha". Here, you can still 'hear' silence, ... Montferrer is a tiny, sympathetic village where you can get your bread and cheese and croissant. You can easily walk up to the village, where you'll find just one tiny restaurant.
Although we were herefor 3 weeks, we still haven't explored all the possibilities of the area. So, we'll be back!
Would like to thank Linda for a lovely holiday at her excellent villa. Set in a beautiful area with a lovely swimming pool. The villa and grounds were as shown in the photos, all clean and very well maintained. It was a shame that we couldn't of stayed longer, maybe next time!
