My wife and I discovered the Ortley Seafood Market late last fall before they closed for the winter and then we patronized them all spring and summer until they closed again this past weekend. We had previously patronized the fishmonger in East Brunswick and when they closed we cast around here, in the Barnegat Bay Area, for a good fishmonger but weren't able to find any. Until we found the Ortley Seafood Market. We have been going there twice a week or so for 4 or 5 months and have never been disappointed in any of their fish or other products. A real distinguishing mark is that most of the fish is fresh and local, from boats that land here in New Jersey. That's not true for the shrimp or some of the more exotic species but it's true for everything else including most of the shellfish, which has a very local, Barnegat Bay taste to it. Also, don't miss the prepared sauces and other dishes that they have in the refrigerator case to the side. Those are made on premises by one of the proprietors and they are uniformly excellent. Prices are not Bargain Basement but neither are they very dear, and the. Fish. Always. Is. Extremely. Fresh! Local and fresh. I can't wait until they open up again next May!
