We were looking for a nice spot where to have a picnic.
The Giara di Gesturi, Sardinian: is a high and steep-sided basaltic plateau which extends for about 42 km2 in the comuni of Gesturi, Tuili and Setzu in the province of Medio Campidano, and Genoni in the province of Oristano, in the southern central part of the island of Sardinia, Italy.
The plateau was formed some 2.7 million years ago when lava from the cones of Zepparedda (609 m (1,998 ft)) and Zeppara Manna (580 m (1,900 ft)) covered older sedimentary rock. The average height of the plateau is approximately 550 m (1,800 ft); it is accessible in only a few places, known as scalas.

The park is so beautiful it was definitely worth 2.5 h drive from Arbatax through the mountains. And we were rewarded - we stumbled upon the horses of Giara several times during the walk.

Roberto, the guide from Jara Escursioni, was trully passionate about the park, the animals and plants there as well as a local patriot of the region. It was one of the best experiences we had while in Sardinia.

We were guided by Michele Zucca at the Museo del Cavallino della Giara, the PARC geopaleontologic museum and the Giara of Gesturi plateau with the horses. He was very pedagogic, well-informed and serviceminded; the best guide I have ever met!

A most do in Sardegna, the steep road to the mountain is beautiful itself and at the entrance you can have a picknick with beautiful view. Of course after a short walk ( 30 mins ) filled with a lot of flower you will meet the wild horses

We visited the Parco della Giara with Roberto of Jara Escursioni in Tuili. He picked us up at the nuraghe in Barumini and took us up to the park. We were hoping to catch a glimpse of the small wild horses that are unique to the park, and we did, not once but twice! A mare and her foal and another group of 5-6 horses. Roberto took us on a two-hour walk in which he explained everything from the flora and fauna to ancient techniques for building huts and the socio economic issues of the area. We saw two lakes, ate fruit from the "strawberry tree" (corbezzolo), and enjoyed the panoramic view from the plateau. Visiting with a guide is a must as it is easy to lose your bearings with no visible reference points, and I highly recommend Roberto! He's been doing this for years and his passion shows through.

It can be windy, so dress appropriately, and walking shoes are a plus.
