There are so many aspects that make this Hotel a favorite of mine. It is family owned and family run with one or more of the family (Oliver, Sr., Nials and Oliver, Jr) on site daily ensuring the highest level of hospitality. The hotel is a beautiful and smooth blend of centuries old Manor House and modern additions. The grounds are a mix of perfectly manicured formal and informal gardens, sweeping lawns and golf course, and even have a ancient Dolmen (the Proleek Dolmen). The grounds draw you out for a stroll every day. If you need more exercise there is a spacious indoor swimming pool, small but excellent gym, tennis courts, putting green and golf course.
All this is set at the entrance of the yet to be really discovered, scenic in so many different ways, Cooley Mountains and Peninsula and across the Carlingford Lough, the Mourne Mountains of Northern Ireland.
My cousin, in her review of May 13, mentions the family dinner she and I hosted. Oliver, Jr., coordinated everything for us that evening so that, with Oliver supervising the attentive yet unobtrusive and seamless service, we could focus completely on our family guests.
The rooms are spacious, comfortable, well appointed with well thought out and modern bath. And the window opens so you can you can enjoy the refreshing Irish air.
The bar is elegant and spacious and very popular with guests as well as locals. The bar staff is amazing in how they manage to serve everyone despite so many comings and goings. For example, in the course of a late afternoon visit to the bar, it was originally just me and my cousin, joined with an ever changing number of relatives, ordering food and drink, rearranging the furniture and, despite the constant change, the staff never got our multiple orders confused.
The food is excellent. Breakfast is included.
The Ballymac is a favorite Irish wedding reception venue but as a guest not attending a wedding reception you wouldn't even know there was a reception - testament as to how well the Quinn family, with family pride, run their hotel.

Sunday lunch - the place was busy (first communions and a christening) however despite this the staff were extremely attentive. Waiter called Ben was excellent!!

Whilst there were a lot of children in the lounge, as expected and accepted, the restaurant was much more calm and sedate - Grown Up - which we appreciated.

The food was very good - portions just right and not overly priced.

The location is beautiful. We sat in the conservatory after the meal and had coffee.

It was a lovely chilled out afternoon.

We stayed here for a few nights whilst on a conducted tour which included the Titanic Experience. The Hotel is very well appointed and front of house is excellent - without exception all staff professional and courteous. All meals well presented and prepared with a pleasing variety. Rooms more than adequate. The grounds are very well kept and provide the opportunity its for a short walk after dinner. There is a "spa" swimming pool and golf course if you like that kind of thing as well but I am not a masochist!

Room Tip: Ours was on the first floor of the wing overlooking the garden which was very pleasant early morning and evening.

12 of us (6 couples) stayed for 2 nights on package deal in May. Hotel very close to M1 (5 minute drive). Beautiful grounds, lovely setting, very mature, well equipped including very pleasant Golf Course. Rooms were very comfortable and clean. Bar area recently refurbished and nice place to spend a few hours. Venue is obviously a popular wedding venue. Breakfast was very well set-up and good selection of foods. Dinner (inclusive) on Saturday night was fine. Local bar (Fitzpatrick's) offer better food / dinner and so worth a visit. We had lunch there on Saturday. Was exceptional and they will organise complimentary mini-bus for parties booking for dinner with them. Overall. Ballymascanlon was a very pleasant venue, lovely staff. We'll be back some time.
