“Excellent Stay- Beautiful place”
Reviewed 15 November 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We went to Kinsale for our Fathers Birthday, as he originates from there. Even though the weather wasn't great, the warmth of Compass Hill house more than made up for the this! The house is quirky, eclectic and full of interesting style. Marie-Louise and Marcus couldn't have been more than accommodating, it all combined to make the stay truly memorable. We've already booked to stay in 2016 and can't wait to go back!

“Hugely disappointing, over cluttered, uncomfortable house”
Reviewed 26 October 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Having read trip advisor before our holiday there was only one negative review and many good ones, I wish we had paid attention to the one negative review as we found it to be the most truthful and accurate. I have never placed a review before but feel so strongly about the terrible experience that we had here that I feel compelled to write something.
The house is advertised as sleeping 13, we were a party of 9 and there was not enough room for us all to sit together in the kitchen or the living room.
The tiny ground floor bedroom had a double bed but no wardrobe or drawers in which to place our clothes. The downstairs living room which had the sofa bed also had nowhere to put clothes and the bedding stank of a horrible musty smell. When we pulled the sofa bed out to make it there was rubbish, hair and dirt underneath it. We were there in August and the ground floor felt cold. The "courtyard" on the ground floor was supposed to be an area to sit outside for breakfast but there was no table or chairs just an overflowing dustbin, general rubbish and weeds The second floor kitchen was the one we used but there was literally not one cupboard to put our food in and the tiniest fridge with no freezer compartment. There was no way we could prepare meals there as it was so cluttered with odd things. It also felt hazardous with very old wiring, Christmas lights hanging over one of the dressers( in August!!) and shelves overcrowded with ornaments. We had to wash things before we could use them. We found all the cups to be dirty, used tea bags in the tea pot and an inadequate rusty frying pan to name but a few things. When we text the owner about the dirty cups he said our standards were obviously higher than the previous guests!!!! Outside this kitchen was a little dank area with a small old rickety table with two chairs but you would not want to sit there as it was surrounded by weeds, an old mop bucket filled with stale water and there was no view.
The living room had two small cheap settees that only sat 4 people, the other chairs were either broken or too tiny for an adult to sit on. There were not enough seats for the 9 of us to sit together. There was no TV. And again a lot of clutter. It was just not a room we could have spent an evening in comfortably.
Some of the beds were so uncomfortable that you could feel the springs through the duvet when you sat on the bed and some of us woke with back ache. None of the rooms had adequate space to put our clothes, all the drawers and cupboards were full of the owners things. The drawer in our bedroom had an open packet of tampax, the wrapper of a birthday card, an old wooden roller blind, some children's drawings, some rubbish and a broken knob from a drawer!!! The decoration was quite eccentric and there were so many personal items around the place that you felt that the owners had just pooped out for the day and we shouldn't really have been there!!!
The garden was the only area that we could all sit together and this is where we spent all of our time when we were at the house, as fortunately the weather was dry. We sat out in the evening and had to buy fire bricks to burn in order to keep warm. There was a tiny rusty food-encrusted BBQ. We rang the owner about this upon our arrival and when the cleaner came around to clean it she told us she didn't know there was a BBQ in the garden, so clearly she had never cleaned it before. The cleaner was very nice but I think she was not given enough time to clean the house and change up to 13 beds.
We gave the owners feedback but instead of apologising for the disappointment they withheld some of our deposit. They charged us for the time it took to answer our email, taking the frying pan back to the downstairs kitchen, bringing in a tablecloth we left outside, leaving the black bin bags beside the outside bin ( not sure where else we should have put them) and various other tiny things that are all part and parcel of running a holiday let. However the most concerning thing is that they said we left the back door wide open, which we certainly did not. Their whole manner was rude and at no point did they apologise for all the things mentioned above.
We felt we paid more than we should have for such shoddy accommodation.

Thank you for taking time to review us, particularly after you have already spent quite a lot of time in discussing your stay with us during and well afterwards. You say that this three storey Georgian townhouse was too small for the needs of your party of nine - this is a little incredible to read, and is factually incorrect: in the main living room (red room of the photographs) there are a three- and a two-seater settee (5), and three arm chairs (3) plus four hard back chairs (4) and a couple of stools and child?s chairs - I make that a total of 12 adults seated in just that room. For the entire house there are 9 sofa seats, 28 chairs or armchairs, 4 stools, and a couple child?s chairs and another two high chairs. There are cushions, rugs and throws too. It is difficult to know what more furniture would be needed.

Here are some other clarifications to factual inaccuracies of your review. The body of the bed on the ground floor has four large and deep drawers for guests? use - certainly enough space to unpack two suitcases. You say all the drawers throughout the house are full of junk? all of the drawers? Really? Every bedroom has an empty wardrobe with hangers, and a chest of drawers except for the ground floor bedroom as already stated. The open packet of tampons: were they used tampons? No. As for finding some of our things in our home, you shouldn?t be surprised; it is our home.

We don?t have a stainless steel catering kitchen - we have two fully equipped domestic kitchens - we have always been able to manage to prepare and cook meals for ourselves and large groups when we use the house. Between the two kitchens, there is more than adequate storage for groceries and perishable goods - there are two fridges after all, one of which does have an ice box - each of these under-counter fridges has a capacity in excess of 60L. The table of the upper kitchen extends to seat ten, and there are in total 12 dining chairs and plenty of the other chairs could be pressed into service to seat a banquet. And if it is a banquet you wanted, there is the enormous dining table downstairs (with four more leaves to extend) that would accommodate twenty for dinner.
The clear white string of lights that drape over the dresser are not just for Christmas; they are for life. The small areas outside both kitchens are intended for anyone to sit outside near the kitchen and not removed from it - perhaps they are cooking and/or smoking. We never advertised that either had a view.

For reasons of politeness and manners we won?t highlight here what went wrong in you part in this tale - you know what those things were - in the end we charged only our extra time to your deposit, and returned the greater part of it. It is clear that you don't like us, and that's OK - what is not OK is for you to post a review that traduces our house and all it has to offer - particularly as so many other guests disagree with you.
?
FYI Inadequate sleep is the number one complaint during any stay that is not in your own bed - we cannot do anything about that.

“wonderful”
Reviewed 17 August 2015 for a stay in August 2015

Have just returned from a weeks holiday at compass hill house - 2 families all ages, have had the most wonderful time. The house had a lovely feel, full of character, large enough for us all easily, very well equipped. We were extremely lucky with the weather and made full use of the garden. Great location, lots to do and see in Kinsale beautiful walks, fantastic food, lots of pubs and music. Would highly recommend. Thank you!

“Compass hill house”

Having spent 5 days - 4 nights at the Compass hill house all I can say is I loved it. The house is such a beautiful old house, it has everything in it that you would need for 1 day or a few weeks. We had 10 people staying and used both kitchens which was a lot of fun. We could not fault the house and its amenities at all. I would certainly stay here again and hope we all will do again..

“Eclectic, but far too ramshackle to be enjoyable”

Maybe my expectations were raised too high by the slick pictures and hype, but there was, for our family, far too much wrong with this house for it to be a good place to stay.

On the up side, it's gloriously situated, very, very pretty, and big. We stayed for Christmas and the owners had decorated the house and we appreciated that.

The down sides were these. Firstly, it was freezing cold; secondly, the electrical system had many features that we felt were unsafe; thirdly, owing to a boiler fault, or maybe it is always this way, the house (and our clothes by the end) stank of part burned heating oil; fourth, the beds were the most uncomfortable I have ever experienced; and finally, the house is so stuffed with the owners' things that there was nowhere other than piles on the floor for ours to go. We felt ripped off, especially as owing to a currency mix up that I never understood and the owners didn't document we ended up paying €200 over the advertised price.

To elaborate: we were told a week before we arrived that the Aga had broken, but not to worry as there was electric heating. That was fine, really - in any event the Aga only heated the water. On arrival the house was very cold indeed, with dehumidifiers in most rooms, and a horrible smell of heating oil fumes that was eye watering in the ground floor kitchen. We are old hands with Agas, so we closed off the room, opened windows and assumed it would go. It didn't, though by day 5 it was confined to the ground floor and by day 7 almost bearable. The ground floor was unusable throughout our stay.

The electric system is old - I'd guess 25 years or more. Delights included finding a plug that the wire had been cut off from (so it had exposed potentially live ends) inserted earth pin first upside down in one socket where the router, with a French style plug, was jammed in; sockets so low to the ground no plug could be used; broken sockets with bare metal exposed; two strand twisted wire to lamps; and switches taped over with masking tape. On Christmas Day, with four heaters on not on full blast, all the electrics tripped twice.

The mattresses are cheap, sprung mattresses. I'm fairly small and couldn't sleep without back ache, of which even our teenage sons complained as well. I was literally woken by the twanging of springs and the lumps these formed were palpable even through blankets. I genuinely didn't get a good night in all the time I was there.

The house is prettily, stylishly furnished but bear in mind that every cupboard and most drawers are locked off or full of the owners' things - drawers full of old door knobs, bits of string, etc., cupboards so full things fall out if you open them. In two of the three double rooms there was no drawer space and in one no wardrobe either - it's literally a bed and a desk in the ground floor bedroom. I had to pile pants and jumpers on chairs. The garden yard was messy and full of junk. Maybe if the ground floor had been usable we would have had more room, but it wasn't because the smell was overpowering and my son found his asthma kicked off down there.

It's such a shame as this has the potential to be a stunning house. We knew the owners were away and had only one contact with them over the break - to be honest we tried to ignore the problems and go out as much as possible - but raised the issues as genuine feedback on return. We suggested they look to their maintenance people, upgrade the electrics and mattresses, and tentatively suggested some refund in the light of the fact that a third of the house (half the living space) was unusable. In response I received an astonishingly rude, sarcastic rebuttal, no apology or suggestion of recompense, just an email full of bold font and underlining. I definitely can't recommend this place. Sorry.
