“Spacious with Spectacular Views”
Reviewed 25 November 2012 for a stay in July 2012

Our stay was perfect, the views stunning and a brilliant base to travel the area to see the Cathar Castles and vineyards of the Languedoc region. The coast is only an hour away and makes an exciting day out watching kite surfers’ race up and down the shoreline showing off their acrobatic skills.

Our party of friends made separate arrangements from a number of airports in the UK but arrived within hours of each other at Salvaza airport Carcassonne. The villa is only 20 minutes drive away and you wonder at first where you are going as the road winds up hill to the top. However, once inside the villa and looking towards the mountains you know the journey is well worth it.

We arrived early and the owners and a team of cleaners were still busy making ready for us. They directed us to the nearest supermarket to stock up with provisions and also suggested we try a quaint boulangerie in the next village for fresh baked croissants and bread straight from the oven.

Catering for 12 is no simple task but the kitchen has everything you need for a large party including a large oven, dishwasher, microwave and washing machine. The fridge-freezer is big enough to take several days supply and the cupboards are well stocked with crockery and pans for mass entertaining. In fact home from home rather than holiday equipment, which can sometimes be very sparse.

The accommodation is spacious with the bedrooms spread apart to allow a deal of privacy. Each has its own ensuite in the main house and the annex has a large bathroom ideal for a family. The young girls in our group claimed the annex wing allowing them to be boisterous without annoying the adults. Also vice versa as adult chatter level after copious quantities of the local wine can become loud.

The villa is suitable for all ages, where active members can take full advantage of the tennis court and swimming pool while others are able to relax on the sun drenched patio. Even hard to please teenagers were adequately entertained with numerous videos, internet access and cable TV but I wish someone had been able to play the piano as chopsticks for a whole week became wearing.

There is no shortage of tables and chairs and a choice of eating areas from inside formal dining to lazy breakfasts on the terrace and tucked away from the mid day sun is a covered outdoor kitchen, perfect for long leisurely lunches.

Spectacular views is our lasting memory of Les Hauts de Gaubil, a holiday destination we hope to return to again.

“Magical, peaceful retreat from the busy world, with views to die for”
Reviewed 18 November 2012 for a stay in April 2012

This is a property we have stayed in half a dozen times over the years and we cannot wait for the next time. As soon as you leave the country road and wend you way down the long drive, your shoulders start dropping and so does your jaw!
The owners have taken every care to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. Whether it's eating in the cuisine d'ete taking in the views of the Pyrannees, playing tennis on the marvellous hard court, honing your ping-pong skills or just exploring the extensive grounds, this property does the trick.
The flexible accommodation makes it ideal for large groups or families with children. There is even a pool alarm in case one of them toples in.
Every time we have stayed, the standards of maintenance and cleanliness have been superb. The owners are meticulous in their efforts to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable. That is why I am puzzled by an earlier review stating that the place was dirty. Never.

“Exceptional property with a gorgeous view”

Our group consisted of a family of 12. Many of us are keen tennis players, so the private tennis court was ideal. We also very much enjoyed the table tennis table and the grand piano.

The property is in a remote location and It is the view that makes it special - that and the exceptional swimming pool, which is deep because it was built for a diver.

The accommodation itself does the job, but lacks luxury and elegance, In our case that wasn't a problem because we had a couple of small kids, so we didn't have to worry about them knocking over a Ming vase or similar! The facilities were just adequate.

Last year, we rented a home in the Dordogne where the owners were clearly professional holiday owner-managers. The management there was absolutely spot on, which wasn't the case here.

Here it was their own property that they were renting out on short, holiday lets to make a few extra bucks. As such, the management was seriously amateurish - but they were friendly and did try hard.

The cleanliness on arrival was really bad. We couldn't use anything in the kitchen without thoroughly washing it first because EVERYTHING was dirty. We left everything much cleaner than we found it!

Plus, we suffered multiple roof leaks in the annex which really spoilt one of our nights when there was heavy rain. Fortunately we only had to endure one such night.

The owners tried their best to respond to maintenance issues. However, it's difficult to believe that they weren't aware of the leaky annex roof before we arrived!

The place isn't perfect, but overall, for a large family group such as ours, the price was reasonable with the exception of the extra linen charge which isn't justifiable.
