This is the fourth time I have returned to this guest house which I have used as a base in Johannesburg. My overriding concern as a tourist from Europe is security. The house itself is secure with all night staff. There is a special alley-way which is locked which leads to the part of 7th strreet which houses the bars and restaurants. Guests are given a key to this passageway which makes the amenities of 7th street accessible by walking even at night. The 7th street area is a relaxed and mixed area epitomising the best of the 'rainbow nation'.
The guest house is family run. Eunika has now passed the management on to her daughter Lizelle. However all the personal touches still remain. Lizelle allowed me to leave most of my luggage at the guest house while i did a side trip- not in a general store room but in one of her own bedrooms . She also arranged taxis for me. Her staff too are friendly and helpful.
For me the good wifi connection was important as was the TV showing all sports in my bedroom.
7th street Melville is a good friendly base from which to explore Johannesburg. There is a driver attached to the guest house for longer trips but shorter trips can be arranged with metered taxes. I used the Gautrain from Rosebank station which makes the airport, Sandton and even Pretoria easily available. I particularly enjoyed my visits to Liliesleaf farm and the diamond mine at Cullinan near Pretoria.
