“Victorias Cottage is a Tardis!!”
Reviewed 14 June 2012 for a stay in April 2012

I had my hen weekend at Victoria Cottages at the end of April. I had lots of communication with the owner who was very helpful.

On arriving at the cottage, we were amazed to see how much space there was! We knew that it could sleep 12, but looking from the outside in, you would never believe the amount of room inside! After running around sorting out who was sleeping where and getting a feel for the general layout of the place (which is very, very quirky!!) we awaited our delivery from the supermarket. This was slightly awkward given the road outside the front door, but we managed and soon had the cupboards stocked up.

Overall the house was lovely and absolutely spot on for what we wanted. We had a few niggles, but these have been expressed to the owner and I don’t intend to dwell on them here as I am sure they have been sorted and wouldn’t spoil someone else’s enjoyment of the cottage.

When you go, make sure you take tea towels, dishwasher tablets and washing up liquid. There wasn’t enough for the weekend for us.

All in all a fantastic weekend was had by all. Bakewell is a very pretty town and although we didn’t spend long in the pubs on any of the nights we stayed there, all of the places we did go to were very friendly. For a lovely lunch or cake and a cuppa, go to the Upstairs Café. Staff are brilliant and the food/cakes were amazing!!

We are always grateful and listening to our guests suggestions as to how to improve the house, for example we used to leave 3-4 tea towels out, now we leave 4-5 for a weekend. We've also added a travel stairgate for when young families go. I love the description of the house as Tardis, that's how we think of it!!

“A great place for Christmas”
Reviewed 9 January 2012 for a stay in December 2011

We stayed in the cottage over Christmas 2011, or should I say cottages, because it is effectively two properties joined together by a nice and spacious kitchen area which is in an atrium in the centre of the two buildings.

There were 12 of us in all, including a baby, toddler and two children aged three to four and the kids seemed to love the place. The upstairs living room was very spacious for them. It was just as well given the amount of toys unwrapped on Christmas Day!

We stayed in the bedroom beneath the living room which proved a bit noisy when the kids were running around above us, but generally it was a good room with French doors out to the courtyard area and the shower/wet room next door was very handy. There was also enough room in there for a travel cot.

Everyone else was in the other half of the house.

Parking was a bit tight because of the nature of the courtyard and the fact getting in and out was a two-man job. It's on the main road so you need people to back you out safely. We did have four cars in there though!

I liked the kitchen and did a lot of cooking in there. Sharper knives would have been handy but the cleever was razor sharp so I used that. We managed to get everyone around the dining room table to eat as well.

And the town of Bakewell is only a three or four minute walk away along the main road. Nice pubs there, as well as cafes and delis. The playground in the park along the river was also a winner. Good shopping in the town too.

And the area generally is lovely. So much to see and do, even in the winter. We didn't bother with the garden with it being winter but I am sure it's a lovely place to have a BBQ in summer because it is raised up above the house and has views out over town.

Wifi is something that could be considered in future. The 3G network was patchy at best and non-existent most of the time. Even though we were on holiday some of us still needed to check work emails etc. Such is the nature of the rat race these days!

One final thing. I am not sure if people have stayed there with cats, or if there is a cat there at times. There was a cat flap and I am allergic to cats. I sneezed a lot!

Martin Emmerson.

Liked best: House was nice and warm for winter and a great place for a big family get together.
Liked least: Blunt knives in the kitchen were a pain and the sharpener had no edges left on it. But this was a minor matter. If there had been a cat there recently I reacted to it. If not then it was simply a coincidence.

Thanks for this. The cat flap is blocked and there is definitely no cat there. My husband is acutely allergic to cats too and sneezes within seconds or going into an area frequented by a cat so I have huge sympathy with you! I wonder what could have caused this discomfort for you and will attend to the matter immediately.
