I know the weather helps. but our walk along the towpath was delightful. The canal was clean and it was enjoyed by many birds and fish. The paths are maintained well. Buggies and wheelchairs should not have a problem. Cyclists were making good use of the off-road path. There has been a lot of hard work renovating the canal. Long may it be used.

Having travelled a fair few miles on Britains Canals it will be great if promises are kept and they finally improve ALL the existing & link up the missing bits of this once great canal route. Notwithstanding this the Chesterfield Canal Trust do sterling work and should be commended! I await the day I can navigate from the River Trent to Chesterfield Basin.

Staying locally we had a view of the canal from our room. Venturing out to explore we got next to the canal and followed it along to Tapton Lock. Apparently it only works for a few hours a day so we were unlucky not to see it working but we did enjoy walking a decent stretch canal from there. With it being quiet we also managed to see a little bit of the local wildlife in the forms of birds, the odd fish and the traditional lesser spotted shopping trolley. I believe it was the Tesco breed with its blue, red and white plumage unlike the Sainsbury with its eye catching orange.
