Derelict house that is currently closed due to works. You can see parts of the old house but it’s sectioned off so you can’t get too close.
There’s a shop which is open & whilst the works are being completed English Heritage aren’t charging. If the New Hall wasn’t there I wouldn’t bother visiting.
Any lack of information can be gained by asking the brilliant staff in the New Hall.
There are great facilities when you gain entry to the main site before you get to either of the Halls.
Also we had problems finding the entrance to Hardwick Hall due to the sat-nav taking us to a back entrance- there was a sign which gave us the correct directions.

When I visited there was restricted access due to the bad winter damaging the fabric. However, there were two displays giving an introduction to the family and the old hall and its relationship to the latter building. The new hall was started before the old hall was finished which gives some indication of the wealth of Bess of Hardwick.
Only requires a short visit but gives a useful introduction to the main attraction.

if you go be sure to also take the self guided audio tour, it makes the visit very worth while. if you don't take the audio guide you will leave wondering about all the amazing plaster work that you can see, you can get to the top ans also see some great view a good place to visited on a sunny clear day, don't forget your picnic

W visited the Hardwick site on Bank Holiday Monday. Staying locally after travelling down from Durham we were disappointed to find that part of the site, the old hall was closed.

This was due to repair work being done to an outer wall that was beginning to crack according to a member of staff. The site is huge so the old hall was a small part of it but it would have been nice to be able to explore it. You were allowed into one section of the old hall containing an exhibition on the hall and the entrance in you could see so much of the ruin. It was nice to see some of it but you couldn't really make out what everything was.

The rest of the site was great and we thoroughly enjoyed it despite the closure.

Visited as part of our English heritage membership after visiting Bolsover Castle, unfortunately the old hall itself was closed due to urgent repair/restoration however we did see the exhibition & was able to walk around the grounds, such a beautiful setting with amazing views.
Lots of information about the hall, architecture, and of course Bess of Hardwick too.

Will definitely be back, fingers crossed the repairs will be complete & we will be able to enjoy all of the old hall.
