Called in on the way past, decent little shop and a cafe, member of staff was very friendly, not worth travelling to but worth a look if you are nearby

went for a ride on the boat at the lock with our grandkids and called in here for a quick bite. Very cheap and cheerful but satisfying for all.

Staff are great, access to the visitor centre is not the easiest but certainly possible with a push wheelchair. Cafe is dog friendly. Tramper hire is a fantastic scheme by Derbyshire C.C. Allowing people with limited mobility to travel along the Chesterfield Canal at least as far as Hollingwood, some 2.5 miles along the canal. A great adventure and a good walk with the dog.

We visited Tapton Lock today (15-10-2017) with our 2 young grandsons and I can highly recommend it to anybody. We decided to take a canal trip on the John Varley which was the best 45 minutes we've spent in a long time. To begin with we spent some time at the visitor centre while we waited and the staff there were lovely and friendly and very welcoming. Even if you aren't planning taking a trip on the canal barge the friendly café is open to all. The towpath is obviously very popular for walkers and bird watchers alike so a nice cuppa and a snack would be a welcoming rest point.
As for the canal barge.......The John Varley.....it was lovely. The canal has been lovingly restored by volunteers with just another few miles to complete and it really is the jewel in the crown for Chesterfield. You wouldn't believe that you are so close to a city centre. It was lovely and peaceful and our grandsons thoroughly enjoyed the trip.....as did we. I also have to say it was extremely good value for money.
All the lovely people that you would meet, should you visit, are all volunteers and they are doing a cracking job of restoring a piece of history for future generations.
Definitely well worth a visit.
