Roman Alcester Heritage Centre

This is a relatively small but important museum detailing the Roman heritage of Alcester Due to its size not all the finds (of which there are many) can be displayed however it is always worth a visit when in town. The museum hosts a large number of school children every week for an excellent educational experience

This is a small museum inside Alcester library. Some interesting finds on display and a couple of videos to tell you more. The person looking after it was friendly and wanted to make sure we got the most from our visit. You only need 30 mins max to see everything.

The museum is situated in the local library and staffed by volunteers who were welcoming and helpful. They said if we had any questions just to ask so were left to walk around and look at the finds etc. in our own time which is just what we wanted. There is nothing worse than someone walking around just behind you and talking loudly about what you are looking at! All the showcases with the finds were clearly labelled so you knew what the items were. There was a tiny green bottle, it didn't seem to have any cracks or marks and it had been dug up in a garden in Alcester. Apparently the area is still being investigated and finds seem to continually come to light. It makes for a fascinating insight on Roman life in a town such Alcester. There are opportunities for children to dress up and tables for them to do any activities. There are a couple of areas in the floor that have clear glass, one has pots in there to show how they can be found, another has a leather drawstring pouch with coins spilling out. It was well laid out and there were leaflets etc. on a stand by the entrance that you could purchase. Also at the entrance was a perspex box for anyone to put donations in and it was heartening to see a couple of five pound notes amongst the coins. In the main body of the library close to the museum were a couple of stands with souvenirs appropriate to the Romans. It is easily accessible for disabled.

I found I had around an hour in hand when I arrived in Alcester and wandered in here. What a great find! A volunteer gave me a simple, informative introduction, showing me maps of the Roman town with a removable overlay of the present-day street plan. He gave a few facts but was careful not to take over all my time. I watched the short film (about 8 mins) which gives a bit more introductory stuff about archaeology in general and is aimed at a mixed audience, including children (although very young ones mostly won't stay with it for long). There are plenty of artefacts carefully displayed a well lit with accompanying info. Unfortunately i had no cash on me, or I would have made a donation. It is great to see this kind of place and it deserves to do well. I drifted out after about 20 minutes but if the Roman world is your thing you will find it easy to stay longer. And since entrance is free, what have you got to lose?
