My stay at Plataran Menjangan was nothing short of amazing! From the second I stepped out of the car the service was exceptional and the views were somehow even better! 1000% recommend staying here when in North Bali, every single part of my trip was perfect.

From the moment we arrived on the rather long track down to the resort we were in awe as we passed groups of monkeys and deer. Already we thought we’d arrived in paradise.

When we eventually navigated to the lobby things just got better, a lovely warm welcome; coconut to drink, an amazing view and even a nice little shoulder massage to help us relax.

But from this point we soon realised that there was quite a push on selling ‘activities’. More on this shortly.

We were taken to our Forest Villa, which again was amazing. One of the best accommodations I think I’ve ever stayed in. Great surroundings with very well kept gardens and still loads of wildlife to be seen. The bathroom was huge and semi outdoors.

We had an issue with the air conditioning in our room when we 1st arrived but it was promptly fixed.

All in all our 1st night was great and we were planning on extending our stay a further 2 nights.

Unfortunately our first breakfast, which was very nice, started to leave a sour taste. No sooner had we sat down, more sales pitches began; this tour, that tour, room upgrades.... the full works.

We agreed to look at a different room type and were quoted a price, happy with the discussed rate we decided we’d like to take the other room type for our extension, later in the day we were given a letter stating the upgrade only to find it was double that of which had been discussed, at this point stating that it was an additional charge to our current room rate. I had tried to clarify at point of agreement that this was the total and no more would be charged but this somehow got lost in translation.

That day we’d also decided to do some snorkelling at the jetty, which was really cool. However; on the buggy ride down to the jetty the driver was really pushing excursions again, this time with an inflated price on what we’d previously been told.

Near the jetty was the dive centre, something I was interested in doing while staying. The guy I spoke to was very vague, seemed to pluck prices out of thin air, first quoting 2,000,000 and then 3,000,000 for a 2 dive trip. I asked about doing a refresher of skills before diving, as it’s been a while, he had no clue if this was even possible. I left feeling rather annoyed about the whole interaction.

For the rest of the day we chilled by the pool, which is a really good spot. Although, every time we were approached by a member of staff the inevitable question; what activities do you have planned tomorrow and a feeling of yet another sales pitch. We actually started avoiding contact with the staff due to the constant selling.

We did use the spa, both having one of their packages. Which was good. For the price we expected more, the massage part of the package was a let down for both of us. Inconsistent technique and perhaps a little lazy.

As soon as the treatments were over and we headed back into the spa reception area, we were met by one of the check in staff. He was there to push the room upgrade some more, with a revised price. I think it was at this point we decided enough was enough, we were not going to extend our stay.

At our second breakfast as soon as we’d sat down, again we were approached by a member of the front desk staff, this time asking we pay for national park entry. A point I’d clarified on check in, where we were told it was included in our room rate. Trying to get this point across just fell on deaf ears, we sent the guy away to be discussed later. My girlfriend was seething to the point she couldn’t actually eat her breakfast, again tainting our whole experience.

After breakfast we went asked to talk to the manager about the national park tickets, we asked he come to our villa.

We arrived back and received a phone call from front desk, it had apparently been a misunderstanding and no charge was now payable?!

Surrounded by nature, the location of the resort is amazing. But remote.

Food at the resort is ok, as are the cocktails. Even for hotel costs, prices are a little overinflated. But there’s no other options in the area so I guess they can get away with it. This is something I never fully understand, if prices were lowered I think people would be more inclined to actually have more than a couple of drinks and eat more food. I don’t think this can even be attributed to the cost price, we’re currently staying in an extremely nice place who’s prices are less than half of the Plataran’s.

Staff are a little hit and miss, some lovely and some we felt were, as stated, always pushing for sales. To the point that the smiles seem non genuine and never seem to last, especially if you decline.

I think that rather than the hard sell approach it would be best to provide an in-room guide of the available tours/excursions and let people make their own informed decisions. From our point of view, there were things we were more than interested in doing but were put off by the staff pushing and the inconsistency in information we were given.

I especially think that the way in which people are approached needs to be addressed in this resort too. At least let breakfast be enjoyed in peace before engaging in a conversation.

Dear Matt247,

Our pleasure for your recent staying with us. Thank you for appreciating our nature resort, design, facilities, foods and encounters. One of the highlights that made Plataran Menjangan is awarded as Luxury Forest Resort by World Luxury Hotel Awards is because also it's concept of "Hospitality with Social Impact" which essentialy its existence has positive impacts to the villages surrounding the West Bali National Park by way of employing some of the villagers as trained and supervised by our Plataran senior staff and the true local interaction between our guests with them. We apologize if our staffs were too excited and too proud to present their personal excitement service and products. Rest assured your inputs are well taken as our continuous improvements program and endless education to our llcal staff in our social impact program.

We look forward to welcoming you back in the future in our resort and our other sister resorts and hotels.

Well, we were not on honeymoon, but we really had great time as a couple here. The location is nestled inside the West Bali National Park, far from the busy city. The place was calm & serene. We had great experience with the deers (Menjangan) and enjoyed the picnic lunch.

Room tip: Get the Ocean Villa with mangrove view

One of a kind experience to stay at Plataran Menjangan. It is located far away from crowd at West Bali, serving you the ambience of West Bali National Park Forest, with ocean view as bonus. Our stay at Ocean Villa was amazing. The villai itself is modern, cozy and totally photogenic. The beach is right in front of our door when we open it, and we can enjoy it from transparent window doorway.

Room tip: Ocean Villa the best.
