Owner description: Tunnel through time to the world of the Romans - with a visit to Welwyn Roman Baths. You can't take a hot bath any more - the boiler went out about 1,800 years ago when the Romans left! But you can see some fascinating remains which have survived from their time. Learn about how the Romans liked to relax with an elegant culture of bathing, and admire their creativity and style. The bath house remains are a scheduled ancient monument and were once part of a fine villa. The layout of the cold, warm and hot rooms and the heating system are remarkably well preserved. The baths are ingeniously preserved in a steel vault under the A1(M) motorway. You can find out how this vault was built. Also on display are archaeological finds from the Welwyn area and an exhibition devoted to the history of the site, which was uncovered during the 1960s and 70s by the Welwyn Archaeological Society. Welwyn Roman Baths are open Saturday, Sunday and Bank Holidays and 7 Days a week during Hertfordshire School Holidays 2-5pm PLEASE NOTE WE ARE CLOSED THROUGHOUT DECEMBER.
Useful Information: Wheelchair access, Activities for young children, Activities for older children, Bathroom facilities

We visited the Baths en-famille at a summer event, so there was plenty to involve the grandchildren outside the site itself.

The baths are buried under the A1M in a large steel tunnel. You arrive down a smaller tunnel from the car park/picnic area above ground. Don’t expect a huge Roman ruin. It’s the remains of a villa/estate. The remains are interesting however, with plenty of explanatory material around the edges of the ruins themselves. Well worth a visit.

We visited the Roman Baths in Welwyn at Easter this year. I had not been for many years, and was delighted to see how the museum has developed. Although it is small, there is plenty there to keep adults and children interested for approx an hour or more. Lots to read, watch and do. Interactive for children with dressing up and things to touch and smell. Well worth a visit.

The Welwyn Roman Baths are situated in a small museum underneath the A1 motorway on the outskirts of Welwyn. The baths were discovered shortly before the motorway was built and it was decided to create a sort of vault under the new motorway so that they were preserved. The museum is one room with the remains of the baths in the centre with information around the outside. Entry is £3.50 per adult with children being free. There is plenty of information to explain what life would have been like in Roman times and how the baths were discovered. There are also activities for children (Roman games, colouring, dressing up). There are no toilet or food facilities on site. Well worth a visit but it won't take more than an hour to see everything here.
