This is a must if you're in Fort William. We watched as half a dozen small boats went into the locks & started their journey along the canal. It really is amazing to watch.

Watched from our balcony as a tour boat made the climb. It is really interesting to watch as the boats climb through the staircase. Worth watching.

There is a large free car park next to the locks and it is unusual to see so many locks together.
There was a boat going through when I visited and apparently it takes 1.5 hours to come down.
I walked up one side crossed over the canal using the lock gate and came down the other side.
You can choose to walk on gravel, grass or concrete.

We thoroughly enjoyed this visit. It involves a lot of walking and a fair amount of stairs but it is well worth it.

We were staying in Fort William and knew of the Staircase and saw it from the train to Mallaig, but also visited to take a picture. It is a long flight of locks and of interest to those using the canal and the casual visitor alike. Not a must see, but if you are close by, worth a visit.
