“A beautiful and welcoming place to stay”

We had a warm welcome here and were provided with plenty of helpful information in advance of our arrival. The owners helped us unload our luggage from our car and showed us round the amenities on our arrival. The cottage was very comfortable, spacious and well equipped. The situation is beautiful in the Vale of Blackmore, with a lovely garden looking onto the fields and hills. It is very rural, and the lanes are narrow but traffic is sparse. The indoor swimming pool is well heated and the air temperature very warm, so very pleasant for swimming. Disabled people who need flotation devices for swimming, e.g. woggles/noodles, armbands, etc, should bring them. Broadband reception is fine; mobile phone reception problematic but I did successfully make a call from the garden. As the cottage is some way from shops and supermarkets it is advisable to bring some food; however, frozen meals can be ordered in advance from a firm in Blandford and they were delivered to the cottage before we arrived. The beds are not adjustable but electrically operated adjustable beds can be hired from a specialist firm in Blandford. We hired a stand-aid hoist from this firm but brought our own sling.
The rural location might be a drawback to some people, but we loved it and didn't find it an inconvenience. The countryside is delightful for walking in and there are charming villages nearby to visit on foot and wheelchair. There are wonderful houses, gardens, coastline, churches and towns to visit in Dorset, and Arne bird reserve (though there were not many birds to see on our visit there which was in early September). Of the churches we visited, we particularly liked Sherborne Abbey with its beautiful fan vaulting, Milton Abbey (where we were the only visitors at the time we visited), Bere Regis with its extraordinary and wonderful roof, and St Martin in the Walls at Wareham, a Saxon church which contains a monument to Lawrence of Arabia (unfortunately St Martin's is not wheelchair accessible).
All in all we had a marvellous holiday and never a dull moment. Another plus for me was that I didn't have to drive through Bournemouth and Poole to get to the places we wanted to visit.

Liked best: The location, comfort and peace.
Liked least: One or two hairy moments when driving back to the cottage one evening along a narrow lane with the sun full in my face and not being able to see the road in front at all.
