We loved Anchorage Aweigh! This was our 24th year in St. John. In that time, we have rented 5 different houses (one of which we returned to for 18 years). We were supposed to go to St. John for Christmas, 2018 but the house we had rented was severely damaged in the hurricanes. We postponed our trip and decided to return when the island was well into recovery in late February-early March. We were so glad we did! My husband, 26-year-old daughter, and I just returned from two weeks at Anchorage Aweigh which, hands down, is the best house we have rented on St. John (and anywhere). The owners, Scott and Patty have agonized over every detail and it shows. The house has a fabulous view over Coral Bay which, from the expansive deck and the living areas, allows you to take in the village, Caribbean-blue bay, and hills beyond. During our visit, we were lucky to see the moon’s glow wash the bay—an unforgettable sight. At night, the stars and lights twinkle and you can hear the faint hum of people enjoying meals and music in the village below. If you want perfect silence, all is dead quiet by 9pm. The décor is comfortable, functional, and attractive. Every surface, the floors and decks, counters, furniture, and even the artisanal stone walls in the outdoor shower feel wonderful to the touch. The beds are incredibly comfortable, sporting the perfect balance of firm and cozy. The furnishings, bed linens, and towels are high quality. The kitchen is well equipped for cocktails and dinners on the porch or living area and there is an excellent gas grill outside. Beach towels, chairs, and a cooler are supplied. The house has thick concrete walls (which is probably why it did so well in the hurricane) that, along with the ceiling fans and ac in the bedrooms, keep the house cool and quiet. We love Coral Bay because it is a friendly, sleepy, funky village that lacks the commercialism overtaking so much of the Caribbean. It has plenty of restaurants and shops and is, in our opinion, the best location for visiting both the north and south shore beaches and trails. Make sure and rent a car with 4-wheel drive to fully take advantage of what the island offers. Anchorage Aweigh is a house that makes you want to linger. We stayed longer in the mornings, drinking coffee on the porch and returned early to the spectacular pool in the late afternoons. We enjoyed getting to know Scott and Patty. They are wonderful owners who will be as present as you want. It was very convenient having them nearby when we accidently turned off the gas to the stove. Scott ran over immediately and showed us what happened! It is a great time to visit St. John. The island is recovering and the spirit is strong. People are more welcoming and friendlier than ever before and we were often thanked in restaurants and shops for returning to support the island. Although many houses and hotels have suffered damage and the foliage is much diminished, the beaches are more gorgeous than ever (and less crowded!) and the trails are open with even more spectacular views. Kudos to Scott and Patty for creating Anchorage Aweigh, the perfect place to enjoy this piece of paradise. We have already booked our return trip.
Ok so the beautiful photos of this place are the real deal. The location is absolutely beautiful and every day that we were here we enjoyed every bit of what this island and house had to offer. It certainly didn't disappoint. We won't talk about the shared cab ride from the St Thomas airport to the ferry (sheer terror courtesy of our stunt driver) but with Steve's assistance (covering for owners while they were away) we accomplished this and made it to the jeep rental (aqua blue and also great). Steve was awesome. He guided us to a grocery store nearby then to the house. It really did help having him do this as we needed a guide to get our feet on the ground with the driving situation. We did learn that we preferred to back up the drive to the house such that it made for an easier way out. We also discovered that throwing th jeep into 4 low made for the easiest time navigating this action (this is no joke). The house was beautiful and many prior residents had left plenty of bug spray, sun screen and few food items. Likewise we left some of our items when we left to help out the next group coming in. Bug spray is your friend, I will repeat, bug spray is your friend. The bed rooms are very comfy and the AC cools down rapidly at night. The common area did get hot and we did struggle with this a bit and never quite acclimated to it. This was really our only struggle and likely one that most couples wouldn't have an issue with as our Midwest blood must be a bit thick. Typically we were leaving fairly early in the morning for our travels around the island and returning in the mid afternoon. This time proved to be an excellent opportunity to enjoy their beautiful pool with unreal view. This was our afternoon spot each day enjoying a cold drink, salt water pool and the occasional humming bird visit. At the same time we would be serenaded by the roosters in the valley along with the free range sheep and occasional donkey. If you enjoy movie time at night, the owners have outdone themselves on recording plus there are tons of books. Honestly, after a full day of snorkeling, hiking and pool time, we were ready for food then bed so movie time didn't materialize. I mean seriously, this is paradise, enjoy it while you've got it! Thank You Ancorage Aweigh for helping to make this trip so memorable.
Anchorage Aweigh turned out to be a wonderful place to stay for our group of four (two couples).
What we loved:
Dual master bedrooms on separate floors
Outdoor showers (there are none inside)
Wonderful salt water pool - so refreshing after a day at the beach and the pool has views too!
Lots of balcony/patio space on both floors
Great location to some wonderful beach and snorkel spots that are not swamped with tour buses. But not an unreasonable distance from the popular spots.
Large gas grill
Plenty of seating for four and even more outside.
The kitchen was really well stocked. I don't think we ran across anything we didn't have and we cooked every day.
What we didn't love:
Sadly the mosquito population was crazy when we were there. We had lots of bug spray but they still loved snacking on us. Apparently this is not the norm there, but it kept us from enjoying the outside as much as we would have liked.
What would make it better:
Would love to see a few games, cards, and dice added to the unit. There were lots of movies, but we would have enjoyed some games for the evenings. It gets dark early and we don't eat out much.
Tips - You might want to check out the unit before you shop. There were many condiments (butter, jams, mayo, mustard etc) that people had left. Might save a dime or two.
We enjoyed conversation with Scott and Patricia, they were always willing to answer questions but they were very conscientious about giving us space. We told them to come chat anytime so we enjoyed some chats by the pool.
I felt the photos very accurately represented the property and appreciated that there were no surprised. The living room was not air conditioned, which I had missed, but the bedrooms were. It got a little warm a couple times but nothing we couldn't manage.
This place is so awesome we almost don't want to share. But Scott and Patricia are wonderful and have created an oasis in paradise.
We love Coral Bay and we love Anchorage Aweigh. The view from the porch is perfect. We spent mornings drinking coffee and evenings drinking wine overlooking Coral Bay and all the boats. The view from the pool is unparalleled- you are on the edge of the world.
Anchorage Aweigh is perfect in it's accommodation and incredible privacy. You don't realize Scott and Patricia are right next door- but they are there if you need them. You only see their house via the pool- but wouldn't know they are there.
The king size bed is extremely comfortable and it's a full bath with a great stone and shell outdoor shower that is wonderful!! Amazing kitchen (although we didn't cook)- gas stove, dishwasher what more could you ask for. Comfortable couches and internet, cooler, beach chairs, towels, you don't want for anything. The fridge even makes ice.
Really cool part is while you have everything- it's almost off the grid.
We can't wait to return. Wonderful!!!
What can I add to everything that has already been said about Scott, Patricia, and Anchorage Aweigh? I turned 50 in December and wanted to do something memorable.... I researched so many countries, tours, and trips. I found AA on trip advisor, saved it as a favorite and compared everything to it going forward in my research. Not one place was as perfect a fit as AA, it was everything I wanted my trip to be!!! Scott responded quickly to my inquiries and booking request. The house was exactly what you see in the pictures-the only thing I didn't realize was the shower in the master bathroom is outside. There wasn't a shower inside as well. With how wonderful it was showering outside every day, I quickly realized there was no need for an indoor shower!! Coral bay was beautiful, quiet and relaxing. The roads were scary as hell, lol!!! I always drive the rental car on vacation-not this time!!! Slow and steady wins the race and you (almost!) get used to driving on the roads!!! The restaurant below the house was our favorite... fish tacos and fried sweet plaintains.... different tacos every day.... I'm craving them now!!! I know this is sad, but I couldn't wait to go to bed every night so that morning would come quicker and I could see that beautiful vista every day. Scott and Patricia met us at the pier with the rental car representative. It was a wonderful experience from A to Z. Affordable, friendly, beautiful. Go.... Go! Now! Thank you Scott and Patricia for my most unforgettable birthday!
Oh! And mailing our charger back that we left behind!!!! xo
