A hidden piece of WW1 history in the mastenbos forest. Note that most bunkers have been transformed into caves for bats which are not accessible anymore to visitors. There are 2 Paths. One of 3,5km which includes the old trenches, and One of 5,5km. We did the small walk which took us approx 45min to complete.

When you are interested in history of WW1, it is nice to take a walk through nature that shows the restants of the german frontline. Never used because the Netherlands didn't take part in WW1. Bunkers, hideplaces, a antitankcanal,...a little piece of history that even children can enjoy.

Great place to walk around and learn about some history of my home town. We did a guides walk, what was very interresting. Our guide had a good knowlegde and had also some nice pictures to follow his story.
You can visit the place for free.
With a guide you need to make an appointment and have to pay 50 euro per group.

The natural reserve contains lots of bunkers dating from WW1 built by the Germans out of fear for an attack by the allies passing through Holland (border 5 km away, they built trenches in order to prepare for such an attack but they never were used because no attack took place. the whole thing is well documented, and it is also a fun walk betweeen the pine trees in the reserve, kids and dogs friendly.btw the germans had cut all trees in the area so it was a complete desert. Also they built an electric fence on the border with holland.

This walk takes you to trenches build in WW1 and a ring of concrete bunkers. They were build to protect Antwerp. On a dry day it is a lovely walk where you can walk from bunker to bunker in the trenches. Some bunkers are closed up for people because inside it is perfect for bats. Others you can visit. On the way there are sings that explain the why, when , what. You can do this walk with (smal) childeren.
