“Not What We Expected But Still A Good Option”
Reviewed 8 April 2013 for a stay in June 2012

My wife and I, along with two friends stayed here for six days in June; during a month long trip of Europe. For those unfamiliar with the area, the advertisement photographs can be very misleading (the Birkeneck has no view looking down upon Neuschwanstein Castle) and the actual castle view is from a distance across the valley. But, the drive over to the castle wasn't too far and lake Forggensee was extremely close. We took one of the boat trips around the lake and found it to be very relaxing and enjoyable. You'll also find some very nice restaurants along the lake shore and nearby. The Gasthof am See, along the shore of the lake is one of these. The location provided a great jumping off point for our visits to the nearby castles, the Wieskirche, Oberammergau, Ettal, the Zugspitze, Garmish-Partenkirchen, and Augsburg.

Shortly after arrival we were greeted by the apartment and given a good overview of the unit and things to do in the area. This was made a bit difficult in that we didn't speak German and the manager spoke only broken English. Nevertheless, she worked hard to try and make us feel welcomed and did just that.

As for the apartment itself: it was very clean, appeared well maintained and the rooms accommodated the four of us very well and the unit is fitted out with all the basic amenities. Finding an apartment with two bathrooms in Germany is challenging; so that was a real plus and the two here are very nice. Just be aware that the bathrooms are not adjacent to the bedrooms. So, if you're shy about roaming in the night in your PJ's be ready to stroll across the hallway.

Now, while all the basic amenities are provided don't expect much else. This isn't fitted out as a 4 or 5 star unit but will meet your essential needs. For instance, while we didn't come to watch TV, the TV only had one english speaking channel (CNN); probably not an issue unless you're trying to occupy kids in the evening or want to watch something besides the news. The only other major problem was the clothes dryer. The building is equipped with one of the european Eco type dryer's; essentially a dehumidifier for clothes...a single load can take an hour or more to dry. Don't expect to just pop a load of laundry in the washer..toss it in the dryer and be on your way quickly. It won't happen.

While it wasn't the 4 or 5 star accommodations we had expected and it did not have the close-up view of the castle, which it appeared to have from the marketing photographs; if you just understand what you are getting and want a very nice place to relax and unwind then we would still recommend this apartment to anyone visiting the area. It's clean, well maintained, the surroundings are beautiful and it is centrally located for visiting this gorgeous area of Germany.

“August in Bavaria”
Reviewed 10 September 2012 for a stay in August 2012

Lovely apartment - a real home from home and very well equipped. We had a lovely time recharging the batteries in beautiful surroundings. We stayed in the attic room - just OK for a family of 4, although we might have struggled if our teenagers had been different sexes as they had to share a double bed and didn't have a separate bedroom but rather an alcove. The views from the apartment were stunning, there was plenty to do during the day - we hired bikes for the week and explored the local area and swam in several of the freshwater lakes as well as going up in the cable car to watch paragliders throw themselves off Tegelberg. Fussen is worth a visit, as are both Neuschwanstein and Hohenschwangau castles, although you could probably give the Bayerische Museum a miss -not very much there. The only downside was that there wasn't much by the way of nightlife and certainly not a lot for teenagers looking for their own entertainment. If you are looking for a really quiet holiday, this is the place for you. Weather was mixed - take clothes for every eventuality (we had a temperature range from 27 - 12 degrees C in the same week!

Liked best: Views and how easy it was to get around by bicycle
Liked least: Endless sorting of rubbish into different confusing categories (a Bavarian problem, not a particular problem with the property!)
