“fantastic stay in a wonderful part of the world”
Reviewed 6 August 2011 for a stay in June 2011

We went for a week in June to Il Mulino. We hadn't really planned an itinerary, wanting a chance to unwind and "get to know each other again" as the Maurice and Angela (the wonderful owners) so accurately put it! The house is really cool, more character than you can possibly imagine (it is an old mill after all) but magically transformed into a house. The well-equipped kitchen with dining table joins onto a really social lounge, where we sat and read and wrote and played Scrabble in front of the wood burning stove. Bliss. The owners told us how they painstaking renovated the mill for their family home at first, and only recently moved out, which explains why it is such a good combination functional and picturesque. This is not a thrown together “holiday home” by any means.

I think their website goes into details so I won't here but the surrounding area is amazing. It's a real taste of Tuscany without the second homes and tourists. We ate at some fantastic restaurants (we all love Italian food and try to eat "locally" and "regionally") without being charged tourist prices at all. Very reasonable, and (of course!) all recommended by Angela and Maurice. We also saw some lovely museums, historic towns, truffle hunted, and had an all-day cooking lesson at a local restaurant. This was the real highlight of our stay, it was great fun and, as testament, we've done home-made gnocchi and pasta 4 times since got back, much to our friends approval... grazie a Graziella! (the owner of the restaurant). My Italian is pretty limited but her daughter spoke English, and she was such a warm person I don’t think anyone could come away without feeling they had made a friend for life. Will definitely go back next time we visit.

Il Mulino is easy to get to from various airports, I flew into Pisa from Newcastle, then back to Leeds, while the other two flew from Stansted. The drive was fine, follow their instructions, and be prepared for some great hill-top views of Tuscany! We can't wait to go back and thoroughly recommend Il Mulino. We were there for a 60th birthday celebration and are now looking for another excuse... bring on my 21st birthday!

“Il Mulino is everything you ever dreamed Tuscany could be ... and more !”
Reviewed 4 August 2011 for a stay in September 2010

I had the pleasure of staying at Il Mulino in 2010 with four other friends- all of us in our 50's.The setting takes your breath away - the old mill is (obviously) next to a river (set in a hollow) surrounded by beautiful hills and woodland. The owners live on the site in the summer in a converted barn - so were there to greet us and on hand if we needed anything but otherwise left us free to explore the region. We walked in the woods and admired the wild flowers, painted, had bar-b-ques by the river, swam and generally had a very relaxing time. It is also a great area for seeing wildlife.
You definitely need a car to get about but DO take time to go to Sansepolcro and Monterchi (Piero della Francesca paintings) Gubbio (we were lucky enough to see the archery contest) Poppi (incredible castle at the top of the hill) Anghiari (beautiful walled city) etc etc. The people in the shops and restaurants of the local town were very friendly and we ate out very reasonably - making the most of the cheap wine!! Climb to the local church and see the del Robbia ceramics - its well worth it for the view alone!!
I thoroughly enjoyed my stay and my friends have already been talking about rebooking - there is so much more we still want to see - plus we are learning Italian!!! If you like history, art, beautiful scenery good food or just relaxing - this is the place for you.
