“Quaint central square with best backerais”

Schweinfurt Rathaus
Reviewed 13 December 2013

I loved walking to the Rathaus and central square daily to pick up fresh produce, flowers and bread from the local merchants. This is a great example of how towns are laid out in Europe--much more centralized and pedestrian-driven than American towns.

It is has quite the history behind it and very beautiful to see. The Rathaus has great symbols of importance that shouldn't be missed and understood. It has the imperial double eagle with the crest of Emperor Maximilian II (1564 - 1574) on the tower. There is a double eagle that is holding the coat of arms of Schweinfurt with it's talons. Another great feature that you can see is at the front balcony areas where it displays the seven coat of arms of the former empires. Inside the building is absolutely amazing to include a dungeon! Great place to visit and to take pictures of and with. Before or after your visit, there is a great restaurant located directly in front. It has great service and delicious food. The view oversees the Marktplatz where different events are held weekly and throughout the year. Festivals, Farmer's markets, Fish markets, and many more.

Dating from 1570 the Schweinfurt town hall is a beauty to behold. Inside you can see the main meeting room with its heavy timber supports. Despite damage during World War II, the building has been restored to its former splendor. The new wing, housing the many city offices is sad in comparison.

We've seen the Rathaus many many times as it's really the premier building in the Marktplatz. Our favorite time was during the Christmas Market when a band and carrolers were performing from the balcony. We've never actually been inside. We've also never eaten in the restaurant that sits below the Rathaus but we've heard great things about it. Make sure you drop by to check it out when visiting Schweinfurt.

I have been to Aposto's it is an awesome place to eat, the town is beautiful to walk through and the buildings are spectacular. Would of loved to walk into the churches to look but they were locked so unable to check out the interior. But the town square has many sales on fruits, vegetables and fish. Wonderful place to look all day and enjoy the town. I have been there the past 2 years while visiting my daughter in germany.
