The Votivkapelle is a very special place to visit. It is a very impressive chapel to remember a part of the Bavarian history.

I took a bike tour around Lake Starnberg. Starting at Kempfenhausen and moving on through Berg...stopping here at the Votivkapelle for a short time. The Bike Road here is close to the Lake although it cannot alway be seen. One of the interesting places to stop is of course, Berg where one can take a Ship further or just enjoy a meal or coffee at the restaurant right on the water front with a lovely view over the lake. On this side of the lake there are many interesting Villas to be seen, and of course areas where swimming is allowed for the warmer days. One passes through a park to reach the Votivkapelle which is very refreshing. The sad story of Ludwig II ends here...as the cross standing depicts in memorial of his death together with his personal doctor. A mystery until today...although his personal Fisher may have known the truth. His house one can find also on this Bike Tour. The Chapel has been erected in memory of Ludwig II. It is at the moment under restauration, but one can take a peep in through the doors. The view from there is worth taking time to enjoy. For wanderer or biker a tour that should be made. Of courses there are a few rises here and there...but it is worth it. Going completely around is a matter of choice. This side of the lake is more interesting as one often has a view of the lake, which gets lost on the other side...but still there are interesting things to experiece with the Kloster and Gardens until one again reaches Starnberg itself. A good 55-60 Tour...so be prepared. One other solution is to take the 25km to Seeshaupt and take the boat back to Starnberg - but take note, not all accept bikes on board. I took the challenge to ride to the end and was not sorry for the experience. Back at Kempfenhausen, of course I took time to enjoy the coolness of Lake Starnberg as well as the view of the Alps.

The Votivkapelle is a neo-Romanesque style chapel built in honour of Ludwig II.
Ludwig, also known as the "Märchenkönig" (the Fairy Tale King), is the one who commissioned the construction of Neuschwanstein Castle, Linderhof Palace & Schloss Herrenchiemsee.

Ludwig, who was quite popular among the citizens of Bavaria back then & still is well-regarded today, died at the same location on June 13th of 1886 under suspicious circumstances. A memorial cross marks the spot where his body was found.

The geographic coordinates are 47°57'50.0"N 11°20'53.6"E, several footpaths from Berg (1 kilometer) & Starnberg train station (4,4 kilometer) lead to the chapel.
Obviously the best time to go there is spring or summer, go there when the weather is nice, sit down on one of the park benches & enjoy the nice view & quiet surroundings of Lake Starnberg.
