We were absolutely amazed at what good value it was to stay in beautiful Hotel Athena in Brides les Bains. Why would we bother staying in expensive Meribel with so much hustle & bustle?? The Olympe Telecabine takes you comfortably up to Meribel and the Navette bus is free to use. The food and service at Athena was just excellent. All the staff could not do enough for us to make our stay truly enjoyable. Thankyou especially, Claire for your organization, Alex for your wonderful, cheery service and Gautier for driving us to the bus stop. Also, the chef! The food was to die for! We hope to be back one day.

We have stayed here a number of times in the past and returned again this January (2018) thus time with just myslef and my teenagae son. As ever we were greeted by friendly staff even thiugh we arrived at 11.30pm. Our room had been upgraded so we had plenty of space with a view overlooking the river. The staff are always friendly and helpful and the manager who we only saw once this time was as ever welcoming to us as returning guests although I know from experience he is the same with everyone. The basement Spa is always a plus at no extra cost so even though the hot tub was playing up it didnt make any difference to us as the sauna and steamroom were fantastic. Breakfast provides plenty of choice (we only went B&B). We are big fans of Hotel Athena and have booked again for February with the whole family. BLB is a small town that feeds into Meribel and the 3V so don't expect wild nightlife with tons of bars. What it does have is great for a family holiday or friends wanting value ski accomadation and access to the best skiing in the world. Chuck in Hotel Athena for good measure and you have the making of a perfect ski trip. Would I go back? I think thats clear from my review...... YES

Room Tip: The Hotel is based next to a river so the river noise is part of the stay.

Stayed here in a group of five for a four night ski break and we were not disappointed. The stafff are all so friendly and helpful - Vince is brilliant in the dining room and Claire very helpful on reception. Our rooms were spacious and always lovely and warm with plenty of hot water - just what you need after a good day on the slopes. Food was excellent and beautifully presented for a small hotel. Overall an excellent base for skiing the Three Valleys due to its close proximity to the gondola - our first time but not our last. Brides is a lovely little town with some nice bars for apres ski.

Room Tip: Third floor rooms nice and spacious so worth the bit extra money

We got a very good deal on this hotel so decided to spend our Christmas (snowboarding) holiday here. The town itself was a nice surprise, really charming and not overrun by tourists - though the town did make a lot of effort and organized children's activities at the main square every afternoon with free hot drinks. There was a free shuttle bus (operated by very friendly people) stopping very close to the hotel which will take you to the lift of Brides-les-Bains. This lift is actually just for getting you to Meribel, you'll still need to take lifts up there to actually get on the slopes, but it was really convenient and included in the price of our lift pass (which was rather expensive).

So I'd definitely recommend staying in this town, but the Hotel Athena was a bit of a mixed bag.
The room itself was good, quite spacious, with two single beds with good firm matresses pushed together and a sofa, desk, flatscreen. Plenty of space for our suitcases and snow kit. Private balcony. A large cupboard in our little hallway which held a safe and the wc was separate from the bathroom which is always nice. The bathroom was good too, water got hot very fast and shower had good pressure. I took a bath one evening and the tub filled up fast and didn't start draining immediately (which I find is usually the case in hotels). Practically no toiletries apart from a big squirt-bottle of shower gel and two packets of shampoo (which weren't resupplied after use). No hairdryer in the room. I have to mention the nice towels, it was the first time I had hotel towels that actually smelled of fabric softener. Everything was kept very clean as well, even the hallways smelled nice and fresh when you'd reenter the hotel in the afternoon.
The radiator in the bathroom didn't work, and we weren't able to successfully operate the one in our room either. No need to as it was always comfortably warm (which is probably why the one in our room didn't start up, it was hooked up to climate control), at night even a little too warm so we slept with the window open.
One morning we put up a "do not disturb" sign and they actually left us alone for the entire day (another first, I usually get chased out by maids insisting they need to clean).
The reason we had to put up that sign was so we could go back to bed after breakfast - we'd been kept up the night before by the noise on the floor above from us. Children running, jumping, screaming,... it was Christmas day so we figured it was an exception, but unfortunately we had this noise every afternoon/evening (the other nights they mercifully stopped at around 9:30 PM). We didn't even see kids in the hotel, making us wonder whether they were guests or actually lived in the private quarters.
In either case, if you visit outside school holidays this won't be a problem for you, but it was a bummer for us.

Our booking included breakfast and dinner. Check the actual timings downstairs, the info booklet in the room had the wrong time and we arrived half an hour early. There don't seem to be fixed places which sometimes lead to some awkward mixups (singles sitting down at tables laid out for couples and waiters having to redo the setup etc).
The first few evenings there were hardly any guests at dinnertime, and we were surprised to be rushed through each course. We'd order drinks for the aperitive, which was brought out with some snack. Then 1 minute after that our first course was put on the table already and snack removed. As soon as we would finish our last bite the waiter would remove our plates and came running out with the next course - sometimes even sooner, more than once they'd appear next to our table if one of us had put down their cutlery for a moment. They meant well (and were very friendly) but it all got quite laughable after a while.
After boxing day dinnertime got much busier, so the tempo got a bit more relaxed for us. But other problems would arrive now: waiters rushing off so fast you couldn't order wine with your food, waiter forgetting the wine, not being offered cheese plate anymore and just being brought the dessert...
Apart from the funny service the food itself (and the wine) was pretty good. I wouldn't call it gourmet or michelin star like some other reviewers, it was just decent good food. You got a choice of two starters and two mains - the options for the mains were actually the same dish with either fish or meat. Not a lot of vegetables. We always were handed the full menu at the beginning of the evening, but it was not clear to us whether we could also order "a la carte", this was never explained.
Some days there was live music which was actually quite nice and not as intrusive as I'd feared.

Breakfast was a disappointment for us, not many options and nothing hot except for boiled eggs. Individually portioned packets of cheese of which some were past expiration date, no charcuterie at all. After boxing day the spread somewhat increased: suddenly there was ham! (only 3 slices left so I left some for the other guests... no refills) And the day after hot sausages and scrambled (powder) eggs appeared. But then bread and cheese started running out and weren't being refilled unless you'd specifically ask a staff member. It made us feel like the hotel was trying to cut down on breakfast expenses. If you're preparing for a day on the slopes you're counting on a good breakfast to get you started.

Facilities then: there are lots of free public parking spaces close by but the hotel has a few private ones too (first come first served). We found the "underground" parking to be too narrow for us, but we snagged a spot on the roof. This was actually pretty convenient, we used the window in our corridor (on the 2nd floor) to quickly pass our bags through and didn't have to drag our luggage up and down. Not that that would've been a big problem, the elevator was spacious and never a long wait. There's a billiard table in the little "bar" area but the space isn't very inviting. It'd be nicer if the fireplace (on the other side of the wall) would come out here as well. Down in the basement there were quite a few spa options but neither of us had brought our bathing suits so didn't got to try them out.
Internet access had us puzzled. We'd received 2 wifi access codes during check-in, each on a note labelled €12 - but no mention of extra cost by the lady giving them to us. (On the hotel's website it mentioned wifi would cost a whopping €5/24h, but in the end the cost didn't show up on our final bill). The access code was bound to the device you first used it on, so tough luck for us who'd brought 5 devices in total (due to work obligations). However, halfway through the week maintenance works were done on the wifi, internet going up and down, and then the access was opened up free for all. Not sure if it will remain like this, if wifi is important to you do check upfront with reception desk.
Reception was friendly just like all the staff really, and available all throughout the day.

This hotel makes you feel right at home, with everything you want/need at a great value price. The Athena hotel stays away from the cold mass-hotels and lets you feel right at home, where everything is excellent.

Enjoy soft towels after shower or bath, great comfortable beds with extra pillows and blankets in a big room with plenty storage cabinets. TV has international channels too (channel 800+).

Especially dinnertime is recommended to enjoy the meal of the day, as it's real 5-star cooking which will surprise you and let you feel great. (we had live music in the restaurant, which was just amazing good).

Everybody is so Friendly here > so you'll feel right at home here no matter what country you're from. The restaurant serves the best 3-course 'menu du jour', which makes all guests feel uplifting, and you can really feel the great atmosphere.

Onsite parking makes for a comfortable arrival, and especially room 304 had a super mountain-view with water flowing next besides the hotel, so it just breathes a comfortable atmosphere.
WiFi is available in the room it's free in the lobby and restaurant areas.
Good people will LOVE this Great hotel.
