Is a place full with interresting exponats, altough is a small museum on two floors, the second floor is the most spectacular.
The pioneers of medicine started from here.

Short 30 minute guided tour through the old library and specimen and medical equipment room of the old school for French naval surgeons. Only one tour in English (1430?) the rest in French. No English digital guides but a written resume. Very interesting especially minor parts of architecture such as I think the 'umbrella rack' was for swords. You can get a double ticket for this museum to visit the maritime museum at the other end of town on the docks.
The Hunter Museum at the Royal College of Surgeons in Lincolns Inn Fields London is much better and free but is not in Rochefort if you are on holiday!!

In the 18th and early 19th century, France led the world in both medical and veterinary education. This school was set up to provide doctors for the French navy. A visit starts of with a guide tour which is in French, though an English précis is available. The library contains about 2500 books of the period and are available to researchers but not visitors. The museum itself is of interest to anybody who is interested in in early medicine. The place reminded me of the collections we had in our medical department when I was a student.

The collection was very varied reflecting the interest of the period and the skill of the anatomists in their dissections. There was an extensive collection of various plant and herbs that were thought to useful and collected from around the world, aggregate collection of medical instruments of the time, many of which were similar to one used today and a collection of various gross abnormalities that you would expect to find in any medical museum. There was also a very interesting dissection of the stages of pregnancy from about 3 weeks to term and the skeletal structures of children of various ages.

Personally I found it very interesting but This is not the place to visit if you are squeamish, and therefore interest is limited. My main gripe was that some of the displays were not well presented and were difficult to seeandagain reminiscent of the displays we had in the middle of the last century.

The first French school of naval medicine. The collection of bits and bones, tools and strange objects are housed in a beautiful old building. Because of the rarety of many of the items visits are always accompanied. The museum has among its many rarieties a complete real preserved human nerveous system. Never seen anything like it. Spooky. Only French guides in the winter, but in the summer the morning visits may have English speaking guides. Check ahead.
