History of photography both technical & the art photography. Missed a lot because my French is very limited @ not enough of the descriptions were in English. The museum should consider having the display signs in English as well as French.

I have been interested in the history of photography for some time. Getting to visit here, to see the (probable) camera used to make the first photograph, and learning how to pronounce Niepce's name was great! Besides a fair amount of stuff on the history of the art and science of photography, there were several exhibits showing the range of photographic styles. Excellent museum.

Lot of unique and interesting photos, first cameras, film about history of photography.
Worth to visit for everybody who takes the pictures.
And it's free!

Chalon has little to offer the discerning traveller, but this Museum illustrates the invention of photography by a local inventor. Extremely interesting and entertaining exhibition if you are into photography!

Niepce worked with Daguerre to develop daguerreotype prints in the early to mid 19th century. The museum not only recognises that, but also shows many other bits of history, including exhibitions. It is situated in what looks like an old and spacious warehouse on the banks of the River Saone. I chose to go there instead of an included tour with Viking to a vineyard and bottle shop, and was rewarded. It would help if they had guided tours with an English speaking guide, at specific times. The attendants were young (students?) and spoke little English; tried to be helpful, but..
