We almost missed this underground roman villa but stumbled upon it whilst waiting for another site to open. Whilst it is small if you love history and all things roman then it’s worth popping in and taking a look around. It certainly has one of the most intact roman floors I have seen for awhile.

A fascinating insight into how a Roman house looked in the first century AD. oddly, though, it doesn't feature in many guide books on Spoleto.

The frescoes and, in particular, floor mosaics are superb, the latter being quite intact for the most part. In the centre of the atrium is a wonderful impluvium, a large, square floor basin that allowed collection of rainwater.

It's €3 to visit and as no one else seems to go there, you may well have the place to yourself.

So much better than we expected, with complete mosaic floors and lots of interesting finds. The people at the desk were generous with their time and knowledge.

This a nice little space under the town hall. It helps to understand how Romans lived. Beautiful mosaic floors.

The town of Spoleto has so many hidden treasures to find and this is one of them. The town is very close and walkable (there are detailed directions for tourist to follow). The Roman house is nicely restored and maintained. The intricate tile floors are amazing to see. The visit did not take long, but well worth the stop.
