I trekked to Erice like everyone else and I was underwhelmed. Yes the views are spectacular but this is a total tourist trap. The funivia was closed due to high winds and we took a rather expensive cab ride to the summit (30 Euros). I stopped by the information booth near the bus parking lot and picked up a map and given the standard itinerary. the woman casually mentioned there was a traditional crafts show and market (third Saturday of the month) in the Spanish Quarter. We walked around the town with thousands of other tourists for 30 minutes and feeling turned off by the endless souvenir shops and tourist filled cafes we thought we'd try our luck with the Spanish Quarter. The rather long road out of town turns to gravel and the destination looks completely unpromising even up close. Upon arrival however everything changed. We went through the exposition of local crafts which might have been dull but for the guide who was so enthusiastic and showed us everything with humor and delight. Beautiful Sicilian cart, handmade sail for the 'boat in the mountains'. Then we went to the cafeteria where we had a very surprising and delicious three course fish tasting menu including tuna salami (!?!). I was totally impressed at these wonderful, charming people and the delicious food. It was such a friendly, local experience after the tourist dense Erice.

Amazing road with great view is going through the hill and ends in the clouds, that's why we've wanted to visit Erice- charming medieval village situated 700 meters above the sea level. If you don't have a car you can also use a cable railway. The view from the top is breathtaking, and small buildings made from stones make a great ambiance. The castle situated on the clif is really impressive. I recomend a visit to anyone. WARNING: the food on the small market (especially in bar restaurant VELOCE) is very expansive and very low quality. Also you should take some additional clothing because wind is blowing there very much and you can quicly get cold. If you're going by car take some extra money to pay for parking.

Magnificent ancient city of Erice, with its castles, churches and little streets and squares, dates back 12th Century. Amazing how it was built just on the top of a hill, all buildings and streets are made of stone, in such a delicate, but proper manner... and what is the most magnificent- are the stunning views down on the landscapes, sea and Trapani modern city. If you are in the area, this place is a MUST for you to visit!

Erice is a walled town 700 meters above sea level that I found quite captivating. It is a medieval city frozen in time. The streets are narrow and curved (to slow down wind). The weather changes quickly, perhaps because of the altitude; it was clear when arrived, but by the time lunch was over, fog had rolled in, giving the town an eerie feeling. At the edge of the walled city is an impressive Norman castle, and fantastic vistas. In the few minutes it took us to walk to the castle, the fog had cleared again.

There are lots of little shops, a number of restaurants, and a public restroom just off the main square, Piazza Umberto. We only spent two hours there, but I would love to return and spend a night or two.

We drove nearly all the way to the top of the hill where Erice is, but we still had to do some walking up a steep incline, including stairs, from the parking lot to reach the town center. The Matrice Church was closed for renovation.
