My wife and I have been travelling through Italy for 9 weeks now and we both feel as if our dinner here was probably our best overall experience while here. The combination of intimate, homey ambiance, personal greeting from Lullo and his family and the wonderful food made our experience truly memorable. Upon arrival Lullo came out of the kitchen to personally welcome us and get us oriented to his restaurant and food. It truly is a family affair as both his wife and son assist him and were also there to make us feel at home. I speak a little Italian and Lullo speaks a little English and he tried very hard to explain all of the wonderful local Abruzzasse and Chieti dishes. We went with all of his suggestions and were not disappointed in anything we tried. We started with Gli Antipasti di Lullo, a collection of 6-7 samplings including a soup, involtini, polenta and several others, each more delicious than the last and each easily satisfying as an entrée. My entrée was Pecora Alla Callara, a hearty lamb dish originated by local shepherds and wonderfully flavorful, My wife had delicious ricotta stuffed ravioli fresh made that day. And because I asked about the Rivotiche ( savory skewered lamb chunks), Lullo presented us with an order to end our meal. We weren't finished as I had a cappuccino and we shared a rich dessert which was then followed by a complimentary homemade digestive containing some white wine, citrus and spices that was superb. The food alone is worth a visit, but the warm, friendly atmosphere and welcoming of Lullo et al, not to mention the tableful of locals that quickly became our newest friends, make this a must for anyone visiting Chieti whether Alto or Scalo.
