Owner description: Birdswood is an historic ex-working narrow boat belonging to canal restoration charity The Friends of Cromford Canal. The boat and gift shop at Cromford Wharf are run by a dedicated team of volunteers. Birdswood runs scheduled public trips from March to October. Additionally we operate theme events, school trips and exclusive charters, making the boat an ideal private venue for functions for up to 40 people. Come and enjoy a peaceful, relaxing journey along the scenic, rural Cromford Canal, get up close to the fabulous wildlife, and learn about the unique industrial heritage of the Derwent Valley.

We had a great two hour trip on the canal boat with our dog, it was a bit cramped as all seats were booked but it was a lovely hot day so the 'windows' were up. Volunteer was excellent, very informative and very funny. Tea and coffees were available and near the end you could go and see the accommodation area where the canal people used to sleep.

I spent part of an afternoon on Birdswood with master Bob and guide for the day Victoria. The trip lasted 2 hours and I think this is fairly standard for Birdswood. We boarded at Cromford and I was surprised to see how civilised the boat was...plenty of padded seats for all, little tables and even a loo on-board! Refreshments are available for purchase. You can sit by an open window or choose one that had a perspex covering if you wanted shelter from flora and fauna. Victoria had a vast knowledge of the local area and the history of Birdswood and certainly nobody 'switched off' while she was our tour guide for the day. She was also happy to answer any questions anyone had. We disembarked at the Aqueduct Cottage and had a stroll around before boarding again to return. It was fantastic to see so many wild flowers that have been left uncut for local wildlife. If you're in the area please consider going on Birdswood as you're helping a charity in doing so. Friends of Cromford Canal are restoring the area between Cromford and Langley Mill and Birdswood trips help to pay for this. I parked in pay and display parking run by Derbyshire County Council. Best to book in advance as trips do get full, you can even charter Birdswood for something like a birthday party or retirement celebration!

Today our group of 32 folks went along to Cromford and had a fabulous time on the Birdswood narrowboat. We received a very warm welcome from the crew and they provided an excellent and very informative couple of hours for us all. Extremely relaxing, wonderful weather and would certainly recommend it. Look forward to a return trip some time. Thanks to all the volunteers there today, very much appreciated :-)

What a lovely way to spend a few hours. The canal barge is very pretty and the space inside has been well thought out.
There are refreshments available on board and a toilet.
The trip up the canal is very leisurely with a stop to get off and take a look around.
Our dog had a lovely time and so did we.
