“Rustic charm in the mountains!”
Reviewed 13 October 2014 for a stay in September 2014

My husband and I and two teenage girls of 13 & 15 stayed at Il Metato, one of the four apartments at il Gufo, a converted farmhouse in the Appenine mountains. The location is wonderful, with magnificient views. The farmhouse is set deep within the woods, which come alive at night and we were surrounded by wonderful sounds of the night and rustling wildlife in the garden and orchard below. The temperature was cooler in the evening in September when we stayed, so we needed to light the open fire in the kitchen, which created very cosy evenings having our dinner by candlelight and open fire, a real experience. The property was adequately furnished with rustic charm, and we felt transported back to the 1950s and very much enjoyed the experience. The swimming pool is a short walk through the woods from the cottage and is positioned in a beautiful spot, the water was too cold for us in September, although my husband and eldest daughter did brave a dip! The pool would benefit from additional heating and a solar cover outside of the peak summer months, we would all have swam and several times had the water been heated! The local town/village of San Marcello Pistoiese has two very good local produce shops where we were able to buy all that we needed, with fresh salamis, buffalo mozzarella, breads and plenty of fruits and vegetables, along with tea milk etc.
The farmhouse owner, Sandro, was very friendly and helpful, checking on us a couple of times during the week, and helped us with planning our sight seeing and excursions, giving us excellent advice & recommendations. We enjoyed a visit to Lucca very much, hiring bicycles and riding around the top of the medieval wall that contains the city, we also took at horse drawn tour around the town, our girls favourite day! We also did the necessary visit to Florence, which was best achieved by a quick train from the local city of Pistoia, visiting the famous Uffizi Gallery & Ponte Vecchio bridge. One of our best days was a visit to the nearby mountain top village of Lucchio, having the best meal of the week served by the little unassuming tavern in the village (the only one). Highly highly recommended!
In summary, If you're looking for all mod-cons, Il Metato/il Gufo is not for you, but it certainly gave us a genuine rustic Tuscany mountain experience, and we would recommend embracing it.

“Small but with views to die for!”
Reviewed 30 August 2014 for a stay in August 2014

Il Metato is a lovely, inexpensive place to stay in the beautiful Tuscan countryside. The rooms are basic and the sitting room is small and a little uncomfortable for the four of us adults who went this August 2014. It wasn't really warm enough for the outside for most of the week we had and also Il Metato's outside areas are nowhere near as good as the other apartments. The road is quite an issue and you really could do with a 4x4 or at least a car with high ground clearance. All that said the views from the pool and the house are absolutely stunning. The local area is lovely with some great walks and access to some of the best towns and villages within a couple of hours drive (not a long time in the Tuscan hills!). The pool is great, if a little cold! The value and the views more than make up for Il Metato's little foibles. If you can put up with those it is perfect for an inexpensive base in stunning Tuscany.

“Quiet piece of paradise.”

This is our second time staying at Il Gufo and we enjoyed it even more this time. The road has been improved getting to the property so it made access to the property much easier, it is a short drive to the center of San Marcello. Everything is provided, kitchen utensils, linens and a washing machine. Il Gufo exemplifies what it is like to stay in a true Tuscan farmhouse. We love the solitude and peacefulness of the property and in the distance you can hear the church bells ring, a true Italian off- the-beaten track vacation. If you enjoy non-touristy places, then Il Gufo in San Marcello is the perfect place.

“Lovely rustic mountain farmhouse!”

We booked this wonderful property online. As with all online bookings, it is sometimes a crap-shoot between the pictures/descriptions and reality. Il Gufo exceeded our expectations. We arrived in San Marcello and the proprietor of the local coffee shop called the owner, Sandro, and he arrived 15 minutes later to guide us up to the farm house. The road to the farm is rough but it adds to the feeling of quiet isolation of the property.
Once we arrived we loved the clean rustic rooms. Great care has been put into the renovation, preserving the old feeling while providing modern amenities. The view over the valley was beautiful and the abundance of wildlife such as wild boar, deer and owls made for great evenings sitting outside. The temperature in the area during our stay was very pleasant compared to the oppressive heat in the southern plains. We spent much time touring the beautiful countryside and then returning for swims in the pool.
During our stay, Sandro checked in several times and he was always available to help with any questions we had regarding the local area and services.
The nearby town of San Marcello is wonderful, with beautiful architecture and kind, smiling people. We made many local friends during our stay, despite our limited Italian language skills.
A wonderful location and we will be going back next year!
