Owner description: Castle Rushen is one of the world’s most finely preserved medieval castles and can be found in the Isle of Man's former capital, Castletown. Once a royal palace, Castle Rushen was home to the Kings and Lords of Mann, with the Castle’s oldest part dating back to the time of Magnus, last Norse King of Mann. Later on, Castle Rushen served as an administrative centre, a mint, a law court and for over 100 years until the late 19th Century, as a prison. Today, spectacular displays illustrate the Castle at various times in history, with figures in period costume, historical furnishings and wall hangings, realistic food, contemporary music and medieval speech brining the Castle’s medieval and 17th Century periods to life. Also nearby in Castletown, you can also enjoy the Old House of Keys, the Nautical Museum and The Old Grammar School, whilst only a short drive away, the ancient ruins of Rushen Abbey can also be enjoyed.

We visited here and am pleased we did. It was very informative throughout. The staff were friendly and helpful. Beware if you are tall( as my husband is) it can be quite a tight fit and remember to duck when entering rooms. At the time of our visit they had problems with the electric so couldn’t go into the dungeon which was disappointing as we would have liked to have seen these. They had waxwork figures throughout parts of the castle and the information supplied was easy to follow. Definitely worth a visit.

My wife & I visited on Thursday 31st having traveled on The Isle of Man Steam Railway to Castletown. You need to be OK with stairs to fully explore the castle via spiral staircases - Visitor toilets were on the ground floor in the moat area.

Castle history is explained , with some interactive displays. Staff are knowledgeable and helpful. We enjoyed our visit.

Castle Rushden, Rushden Abbey and Old School, all closed when a group of us bought the £25 ticket, not impressed at all, was supposed to be open, and it was a Saturday.
Don't by the all holiday pass, waste of money.

You just need to go. Fantastic and gives you an amazing feel of what it was like 100s of years ago. Great to view Manx heritage.
