What a great Friday night dinner we enjoyed here during our break on Orkney. Up a long driveway a wee distance from the centre of Orkney is this hotel. The place itself has a traditional feel to it - nothing minimalist or even especially historic about it, but it certainly hasn’t been modernised and is like stepping back in time a few decades - but in a good way.

The menu is impressive - a good range of interesting options, with plenty of local flavour.
We began with a local gin for me and a glass of red for my husband. Complimentary canapés and breads were brought to our table. He chose to have a starter - the soufflé - followed by the Ronaldsay mutton for main. I went for the duck breast - which was amazing. Our mains came with a side of vegetables (carrots and broccoli cooked just right), while the dishes themselves were served with different potato accompaniments and lovely, well matched extras.

We decided to follow up with the cheese option; the menu listed a number of cheeses, many of them local. Even better, we were told that we would be served a portion of each of the cheeses, so no need to angst over which ones to choose! We also appreciated the quality crackers and oatcakes that came with the cheeses. We ordered ports to go with the cheeses; these came in lovely stemmed crystal glasses. And then on to coffee with petit fours - of course they were delicious too. The only thing I would have changed - the coffee cups were not particularly large yet came out only half full. I think the assumption must be that everyone takes milk, and lots of it. We don’t, so although the coffee was actually good coffee, there were only a few mouthfuls, and a large jug of milk went untouched.

The restaurant, which is a good size, got busier as the evening went on; there were quite a few staff on, but they were all kept fully occupied. There are good Covid practices here, great toilets (nice soap and handcream plus lovely white hand-towels) and plenty of parking. And the prices are good too - this restaurant really does offer excellent quality and excellent value. Highly recommended.

.....basically if you don't like meat n two veg or fish you're best avoiding the Lynnfield Hotel.

Bizarre "Wild West" style signage at the bottom of the driveway aswell (??)

Pretty average food. The restaurant would deserve a bit of refreshing. Pretty old school. Food was ok. We had the duck and mouton. Duck fat wasn't rendered properly and mouton was slightly over cooked. Overall ok experience but very expensive for what it is. Great selection of whisky.

Tip : Definitely worth booking ahead as the restaurant is popular with guest and locals

The menu is full of local produce which is always great to see. Although not large it offers a good choice.

Starters of butternut squash soup and cheese soufflé were very good and nicely presented.

The trio of fish for mains was superb, lovely buttery sauce served with colcannon mash. Steak was perfectly cooked with crispy onions - again both lovingly presented.

The cheese board was very good - five local cheeses served with home made oatcakes and chutney. A mini dessert selection of five desserts was superb.

Wine list had a very good selection for a restaurant of this size. We opted for the Albariño which was excellent.

Service was warm, friendly and very attentive.

Overall this was a lovely meal and I would wholeheartedly recommend for a visit.
