What a wonderful meal, in a fabulous restaurant in a great location. We enjoyed great service from start to finish, from our pre-order right through the whole meal experience -the food by the new chef was exemplary- perfectly and innovatively presented and deliciously too. Empty plates across the board, a great night thank you everyone! X

We were visiting Hay for the book festival and remembered this super pub from many years before. Really good to read so many recent positive comments. We managed to secure a booking on the busy Bank Holiday Monday evening. We had the table 8-10 and could arrive earlier as they have a couple of tables for drinkers. Live jazz was advertised on each Friday but also each night of the festival. Great
We turned up a little early and went straight to our table
Drinks ordered and a longish wait to place the order was not at all a problem. Staff were friendly enough but some had left their smile at home. Food was served swiftly and the smoked salmon starter with blue cheese and potato salad was declared delicious. I had the asparagus rocket and hazelnut again lovely combination
Mains were and excellently cooked steak and very chunky chips and Moroccan chicken - this was really tasty but we felt that salad or tabouleh might have gone better than chips or new potatoes
Service again was swift and we were offered deserts straight away.
We could see more people arriving without reservations and wondered if they thought they might get a third booking out of our table
But we had a nice enough evening with portions of the right size - so many places seem to over load plates these days
The jazz quartet added to the evening.
This is not a cheap eating place and a smile would go a long way to making clients feel welcome.

Make a reservation! We didn't but were fine with waiting for an hour with a cider in the den until a table was ready. Live jazz on Fridays, and the steak was delectable. Definitely not standard pub fair, much more upscale than we could've expected for what we thought was just a neighbourhood pub. Perfect for a romantic evening away!

Four of us had a long weekend in Hay-on-Wye and ate out four times in total over the weekend.
Annoyingly we only visited this restaurant for our final meal out Sunday Lunchtime and only because we could not get a table anywhere else. I say annoyingly because we would most certainly have eaten here at least once more over the weekend if we had known how good it is, easily the best place we ate at over the weekend.
We had been put off using the restaurant all weekend by the very cheap looking green flags hanging outside and the banner advertising their Jazz nights. I am afraid it makes the pub look much more like a sports pub than what is actually a very nice restaurant once you are inside.
The staff were friendly and attentive. The menu varied enough to meet most tastes although we all opted for the Sunday Roast which was very nice indeed. The salmon starter was apparently excellent according to a very nice gentleman sat at the next table and my wife thoroughly enjoyed her Tiramisu.
I have given the restaurant an excellent score despite the exterior!
Note to the management: Please try and make the exterior as warm and welcoming as the interior

Thank you for your helpful comments, so glad you found our food really good. - we have been thinking about for the front for a while and your comment prompted us to remove the green banner (we are thinking about the flags) and it does look a lot better. Once the hanging baskets are up (and the weather improved) it will all look lovely.

Our only problem now is how to let people know about the amazing live jazz musicians every Friday featuring some top internationally renown jazz soloists from all over the country!

hope to see you again.
